					</table>Union <a href="https://powermin.gov.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Minister for Power</a> and <a href="https://mnre.gov.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New &amp; Renewable Energy</a> R. K. Singh  has said the government aims to add 80 GW of thermal power capacity by 2031-32, reiterating that renewables alone are not enough to meet India&#8217;s surging power demands.
He told a conference of energy sector stakeholders that since nuclear capacity cannot be added at a rapid pace, coal-based thermal capacity has to be augmented to meet the energy needs.
“We have 27 GW under construction, and we had thought that we will add another 25 GW. But, we have decided that we will start work on at least 55 GW – 60 GW of thermal capacity. As <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/indias-power-demand-rise-sharply-256-gw-2024-25" target="_blank" rel="noopener">demand</a> keeps accelerating, we will keep adding this capacity,” he said.
“Thermal cannot be written off until energy storage becomes viable. So, thermal is going to stay until energy storage becomes cost-effective for round-the-clock supply through renewable energy,” the minister said.
Recently, Singh stated India cannot be <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/cop28-indias-coal-to-clean-commitments-jeopardy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pressured</a> into reducing its coal usage to generate electricity.
According to the National Electricity Plan projections for 2022-32, India needs to reach 283 GW of coal and lignite-based installed capacity by 2031-32, up from the current 214 GW.
Singh exhorted the states to ensure they have enough thermal capacity in place by extending the life of thermal projects and through innovation and modernization. “If you do not maintain your thermal capacity and instead expect us to give power from the central reserve, that is not going to happen. We will allocate additional power to those states which are maintaining and running their capacities.”
Given the power needs, the industry will keep getting orders for thermal capacity addition for the next 5 to 7 years. The minister said thermal energy was written off a few years ago, which was premature.
The minister said a payment security mechanism which does not have any parallel anywhere in the world has been put in place. Payments are guaranteed within 75 days; current dues are 100% up to date, and even the legacy dues are also being paid.
He assured power developers that the future power requirements of the distribution companies would be collated and shared with them so that they could ramp up capacity.
Recognizing concerns raised by EPC vendors regarding the bidding process, the minister assured them that their issues would be addressed. Equipment suppliers voiced concerns about credit shortages, bank guarantees, qualifying requirements, and technical specifications.

The renewable energy share in the cumulative power mix increased marginally from 170.3 GW quarter-over-quarter, representing 37.9 % of the overall power capacity mix.

In its latest report, ‘Financial Constraints in Renewable Energy Sector,’ the Committee said the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy should look at setting up a green bank system to address the persisting finance-related challenges faced by the renewable energy sector in India.
<a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/allow-private-sector-to-mine-critical-minerals" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The government introduced a Bill in the Lok Sabha to amend the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act to allow the private sector to explore and mine critical minerals</a> used in the energy sector. The proposed legislation seeks to introduce an exploration license for critical and deep-seated minerals. It plans to remove six atomic minerals, such as lithium, titanium, and zirconium-bearing minerals, from the list of reserved minerals. These minerals play vital roles in space industries, electronics, communications, energy sectors, and electric batteries, making them crucial for India’s net-zero emission commitment.
<a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/recs-profit-up-21-yoy-q1-fy-2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">REC Limited, a government-owned infrastructure finance company, posted a net profit of ₹29.61 billion (~$361.12 million) in the first quarter (Q1) of the financial year 2024</a>, an increase of 21% year-over-year from ₹24.47 billion (~$298.44 million). The numbers marked the company’s highest-ever profit in the first quarter of any financial year. The increase in profit was attributed to improving asset quality and effective cost management. The company’s revenue from operations in Q1 stood at ₹109.59 billion (~$1.34 billion), a rise of 16%, compared to ₹94.59 billion (~$1.15 billion) during the same period last year.
<a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/west-bengal-tender-900-mw-pumped-storage-project" target="_blank" rel="noopener">West Bengal Power Department has invited bids to develop, and commission 900 MW pumped storage projects on a design, build, finance, operate, and transfer basis on the Bandu reservoir in Purulia,</a> West Bengal. The project will be divided into four capacities of 225 MW each. The total project cost is estimated to be ₹47 billion (~$573.6 million). The last day to submit the bids is August 28, 2023. Bidders must furnish a bid security of ₹500 million (~$6.1 million).
<a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/maharashtra-bids-50-mw-grid-connected-solar-projects" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mahatma Phule Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Technology has invited bids for the installation and commissioning of 50 MW of grid-connected solar power projects along with the associated transmission</a> lines up to the point of interconnection in the Sangli district of Maharashtra. The successful bidder will also have to take care of the project’s operation and maintenance for five years. The projects will be developed in the Sangli district’s Kundalpur, Tisangi, Rajuri, and Ghatnandre villages.
<a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/sunnovas-q2-loss-100-million-soaring-interest-expenses" target="_blank" rel="noopener">U.S.-based residential solar firm Sunnova’s net loss widened to $100.8 million during the second quarter of 2023, a year-over-year (YoY) increase of 628.6% compared to a net loss of $13.8 million.</a> The rise in net loss was attributed to an increase in interest expense, amounting to $32.4 million, and higher general and administrative expenses. However, there was a partial offset due to a $13 million increase in interest income resulting from a larger customer loan portfolio. Revenue surged to $166.4 million, an increase of $19.4 million YoY.
<a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/renew-gentari-enter-jv-renewable-assets-in-india" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Independent renewable power producer ReNew signed a 50:50 joint venture agreement with clean energy solutions provider Gentari to develop solar, wind, and energy storage assets</a> to achieve a clean power capacity target of 5 GW in India. The partnership follows Gentari’s initial investment for a 49% equity stake in ReNew Power’s 403 MW power project that the latter announced in May this year. The partnership will help Gentari expand its renewable energy portfolio and support its target to build more than 30 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 globally.

In the first half of the year, China installed a renewable energy capacity of 109 GW, accounting for 77% of the country’s newly installed capacity. This included 5.4 GW of hydropower, 22.9 GW of wind, 78.4 GW of solar, and 1.7 GW of biomass.
<a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/use-solar-water-purification-electrochemical-separation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chemists at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have taken a significant step towards a greener future for water remediation, where they have demonstrated the integration of solar energy</a> into an electrochemical separation process. The researchers said the discovery opens doors to potentially power such applications entirely with renewable energy sources. Electrochemical separation, or electrochemical desalination, is a promising technique for purifying contaminated water and environmental remediation.
<a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/ministry-transmission-line-evacuate-1-5-gw-solar-karnataka" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Ministry of Power has approved a request from Gadag II-A Transmission (a wholly-owned subsidiary of ReNew Transmission Ventures) to set up overhead transmission lines for 1,500 MW</a> of solar projects in Gadag, Karnataka. The transmission lines will be set up under the &#8216;Transmission Plan for Solar Energy Zone in Gadag (1,500 MW), Part A-Phase II.&#8217; The approval for the overhead lines has been granted for 25 years. The program covers the 400 kV DC transmission line between the Gadag and Koppal pooling stations.
<a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/gridseve-raises-682-million-expand-ev-network-uk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">UK-based electric vehicle charge point operator GRIDSERVE Sustainable Energy (GRIDSERVE) has raised a total of £526 million (~$682 million) in green infrastructure financing to accelerate its e-mobility</a> expansion in the country. The financing comprises £326 million (~$423 million) in committed loan facilities, with a further £200 million (~$259.5 million) uncommitted accordion facility that the company has reserved for future assets. The £326 million facility consists of a £300 million (~$389 million) term loan, a £10 million (~$13 million) working capital facility, and a £16 million (~$21 million) value-added tax facility.

Daily News Wrap-Up: Solar Accounts for 16% of India’s Installed Power Capacity

The share of renewable energy (including large hydro) in India’s overall installed power capacity mix rose marginally to 36.2% at the end of the first quarter of 2020, from <a href="https://mercomindia.com/solars-share-india-total-installed-power-capacity/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">35.9%</a> at the end of the calendar year (CY) 2019, according to the data from the Central Energy Authority (<a href="http://cea.nic.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">CEA</a>), and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (<a href="https://mnre.gov.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MNRE</a>).
As of March 31, 2020, the country’s total installed power capacity stood at about 372 GW, up from 358.6 GW during the same time last year. Of this, the installed power capacity from renewable sources (including large hydro) accounted for about 134.7 GW, up from about 125.5 GW as of Q1 2019. Solar installations accounted for about 27.2% of the overall renewable capacity.
Renewable Power
Excluding large hydro projects, the contribution of renewables accounted for 23.9% of the country’s total power capacity mix. This includes installed power capacity from solar power (9.8%), wind power (10.1%), bio-power (2.7%), small hydro projects (1.3%), and waste-to-energy projects (0.04%).
MNRE’s data also showed cumulative wind power installations were higher than solar installations with about 37.7 GW of installed capacity, as of March 31, 2020, up from 35.6 GW last year. Large hydro projects were still the leading source of renewable power, with about 45.7 GW of installed capacity, up slightly from 45.4 GW, previously.

According to <a href="https://mercomindia.com/product/india-solar-project-tracker/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mercom India Solar Project Tracker</a>, India added ~950 MW (preliminary figures) of solar capacity in Q1 2020, and cumulative solar installations in India stood at ~36.6 GW by end of Q1 2020. Solar power represents 9.8% of the total installed power capacity in India as of Q1 2020.
Small hydro installations contributed a lower share than the same time last year at 1.26%, down from 1.28% last year. Installed capacity, however, was up at 4.68 GW from 4.59 GW the previous year.
Non-Renewables
Thermal power continued to hold a significant share of India’s installed power capacity mix. This includes installed power of coal (53.36%), gas (6.71%), lignite (1.78%), and diesel (0.14%). stood at about 230.6 GW up from 226.3 GW in the same period last year. However, the overall share of thermal power fell to about 62%, down from 63.1% percent last year, highlighting the progress made by renewable energy.
Coal-based power continued to be the dominant source of energy in India, with about 198.5 GW of capacity, up from 194.4 GW at the same time last year. Gas-based power installations rose marginally to 24.96 GW from 24.94 GW, previously. Lignite-based power installations rose marginally to 6.61 GW from 6.26 GW, previously.
The share of diesel-based power, however, fell to 509.7 MW from 637.6 MW as of Q1 2019. Nuclear power capacity remained unchanged from last year at 6.78 GW.
From the installation target of 175 GW of renewable capacity by the end of 2022, India aims to raise its renewable capacity to <a href="https://mercomindia.com/india-renewable-capacity-climate-action-summit/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">450 GW</a> by 2030.

Solar’s Share in India’s Installed Power Capacity Mix Rises to 9.8% as of Q1 2020

Renewable energy (including large hydro) accounted for almost 36% of India’s total power capacity mix at the end of the calendar year (CY) 2019, according to data from the Central Electricity Authority (<a href="http://cea.nic.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">CEA</a>), and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (<a href="https://mnre.gov.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MNRE</a>).
The country’s total installed power capacity stood at about 371 GW as of December 31, 2019. Of this, renewables (including large hydro) accounted for about 133.2 GW, up from 122.8 GW last year, an 8.5% rise.
According to Mercom’s <a href="https://mercomindia.com/product/india-solar-project-tracker/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">India Solar Project Tracker</a>, India added over 7 GW (preliminary figures) of solar capacity in CY 2019.
According to Mercom, cumulative solar installations in the country stood at around 35.6 GW at the end of CY 2019, representing 9.6% of the total installed power capacity mix. It accounted for about 26.7% of all renewable energy in the country. In comparison, <a href="https://mercomindia.com/solars-share-indias-total-installed-capacity-7-9-end-2018/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">at the end of 2018</a>, solar power contributed to roughly 27.9 GW of the total installed generation or 7.9% of the overall power capacity.

Wind power installations in the country have now touched 37.5 GW. This translates to 10.1% of the total installed power capacity. The cumulative wind power installations at the end of 2018 were 35.1 GW.
Meanwhile, cumulative hydropower installations moved up to about 50.1 GW and accounted for 13.5% of India’s total installed power capacity. Of this, 4.67 GW or 1.26% were small hydropower. There were no new large hydro installations in 2019, cumulative installations stood at 45.4 GW, accounting for 12.25% of the overall energy mix at the end of 2019.
Biopower capacity share in the overall power mix saw a small dip, dropping to 2.66% from 2.77% last year. Cumulative installations at the end of 2019 stood at 9.86 GW.
Mercom’s research also showed that solar and wind accounted for approximately 55% of new power capacity additions in 2019. This was a decrease from last year where solar and wind, combined, accounted for nearly 65% of new capacity additions during the year. This is mostly because of the rise in coal and lignite installations which rose to 44.1% of total installations, up from 27.5% last year.
On the non-renewables front, coal power installations held the top spot. Cumulative coal installations stood at around 198.5 GW or 53.5% of the total mix. Gas power accounted for 6.73% of the mix with a 24.9 GW installed base, while nuclear and lignite based power both held about 1.8% of the overall share with around 6.8 GW of installations each.
Diesel had the smallest share in India’s energy mix, with an installation of only about 510 MW, accounting for 0.14%.
Thermal power, which includes coal, lignite, gas, and diesel, maintained its stronghold and continued to be the largest contributor to the country’s power pool. Its cumulative installations rose to 230.7 GW by the end of December 2019, up from 223 GW last year.
However, its overall share fell to 62.24% from 63.2% last year, highlighting the progress made by renewable energy capacity additions.
Last year, Mercom <a href="https://mercomindia.com/solars-share-indias-total-installed-capacity-7-9-end-2018/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">reported</a> that renewable energy capacity additions (excluding large hydro) were on the rise at a significant pace in India, accounting for approximately 22% of India’s power capacity mix at the end of December 2018. Later in <a href="https://mercomindia.com/large-hydro-projects-renewable-sources/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">March 2019</a>, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the proposal put forward by the Ministry of Power to include <a href="https://mercomindia.com/large-hydro-power-indias-renewable-mix-good/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">large hydropower</a> projects over 25 MW under the aegis of renewable energy. This step added 50.1 GW of hydro to the renewable energy basket.
From the installation target of 175 GW of renewable capacity by the end of 2022, India aims to raise its renewable capacity to <a href="https://mercomindia.com/india-renewable-capacity-climate-action-summit/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">450 GW</a> by 2030.

Solar’s Share in India’s Total Installed Power Capacity Reaches 9.6% at the End of 2019

Renewable energy capacity additions continue to increase at a significant pace in India, accounting for approximately 22 percent of India’s power capacity mix at the end of December 2018.
India’s total installed power capacity stood at around 353 GW at the end of December 2018, with renewables accounting for 77.5 GW making up 22 percent,  compared to cumulative renewable energy installations of 65.3 GW at the end of December 2017 which represented a  19.4 percent increase.
According to Mercom’s <a href="https://mercomindia.com/product/india-solar-project-tracker/">India Solar Project Tracker</a>, solar accounted for approximately 27.9 GW of the total installed generation, which is 7.91 percent of the total installed power capacity. The share of solar in the energy generation mix grew from <a href="https://mercomindia.com/solar-top-renewable-source-india-2017/">5.79 percent</a> in December 2017 to 7.91 percent in December 2018. Among the renewables, solar accounted for approximately 36 percent of the installed capacity.

Wind accounts for 35.1 GW of the total installed power capacity and nearly 10 percent of the overall power capacity mix as of December 2018. Due to slowdown in 2018, this implies a slight rise from the 32.8 GW of installed capacity and 9.8 percent of the overall power capacity mix in December 2017.
Hydro power’s cumulative installations stood at 45.4 GW, making up 12.9 percent of India’s total installed capacity, a decline compared its share of 13.4 percent at the end of 2017.
Small hydro had a cumulative installed capacity of 4.5 GW, representing 1.28 percent of the total installed capacity at the end of December 2018.
The share of nuclear power has declined from 2.02 percent as of December 2017 to 1.92 percent as of December 2018, with no capacity installed during the year.
Thermal power (which includes coal, lignite, gas and diesel) is still the predominant source of power in the country with its cumulative installations reaching 223 GW, representing 63.2 percent of the total installed power capacity. Coal power accounted for a significant share of the mix, with 54.2 percent of the total installed power capacity, followed by natural gas at 7.1 percent, lignite at 1.8 percent and diesel with a minute 0.18 percent share.
However, thermal power’s share of the overall power mix is gradually declining with the significant rise in renewable energy capacity additions. Coal power’s contribution (including lignite) fell to 56 percent in December 2018, while it accounted for more than 57 percent of the total installed power capacity back in December 2017.
Current installation trends show the country’s steady transformation from fossil fuels towards renewable energy.
