Indian solar manufacturers eye exports as tariffs increase in Southeast Asia

Solar power accounted for 22% of India’s total installed power capacity and 47.6% of the total installed renewable energy capacity at the end of the first quarter (Q1) of the calendar year 2025. The share of solar power in the total power capacity increased by 6.8% quarter-over-quarter and 27.3% year-over-year (YoY). India’s renewable energy capacity, including large hydroelectric projects, accounted for 46.1% of the cumulative power capacity, with 218.6 GW installed at the end of Q1, according to data from the Central Electricity Authority, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, and Mercom’s India Solar Project Tracker.
The 90-day pause on reciprocal trade tariffs between the U.S. and China may temporarily dampen prospects for Indian solar exporters, but the heavy U.S. import duties on Southeast Asian solar products present a significant opportunity. The U.S. Department of Commerce, in its investigations against solar modules imported from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, found that the four countries sold solar cells in the U.S. at a less than fair value, and some of them originated from China.

L&T Energy Green Tech won the Indian Oil Corporation’s auction to set up a green hydrogen generation unit of 10 kilo tons per annum (KTPA) capacity on a build-own-operate basis at its Panipat Refinery Petrochemical Complex, Haryana. The company won the entire 10-KTPA capacity at a rate of ₹397 (~$4.66)/kg. ReNew E Fuels and NTPC Renewable Energy also participated in the bidding process.
The Ratnagiri Zilla Parishad in Maharashtra was incurring a steep electricity bill of ₹91.6 million (~$1.07 million) a year on powering streetlights that the 846 gram panchayats had to pay. Last year, the local body hit upon a revolutionary idea to bring down its power bills. But it did not opt for the oft-trodden path of rooftop solar. Instead, it went in for a 1 MW ground-mounted solar project.
Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission released draft regulations for captive and renewable energy generating projects. All stakeholders must submit their written comments by May 30, 2025. For generating projects commissioned on or after April 1, 2009, these projects will retain 100% of gross proceeds on account of the clean development mechanism during the first year of commercial operation. From the second year onwards, the procurer’s share will increase yearly by 10% until it reaches 50%.
U.S.-based solar tracker systems provider FTC Solar achieved a revenue of $20.8 million in the Q1 of 2025, a 65.3% YoY increase from $12.58 million. The increase in revenue can be attributed to higher product volumes. In Q1, the company’s net loss narrowed to $3.8 million compared to $8.8 million, a 58% decrease from the same quarter of the previous year.
Sunrun, a U.S.-based residential solar and battery storage provider, reported a 10% increase in total revenue of $504.27 million for the Q1of 2025 compared to $458.19 million in the same period of 2024. The revenue exceeds analysts’ expectations, which ranged from $484.8 million to $493.97 million, The company’s adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization was $80.01 million, higher than the analyst estimates of $58.17 million.
Utility-scale energy storage firm Fluence Energy recorded a revenue of $431.6 million in the Q2 of the fiscal year (FY) 2025, a 31% YoY decrease. Despite the dip, revenue exceeded analysts’ estimates by $106.3 million. The company expects a significant portion of its revenue for FY 2025 to be recognized later in the year. The company saw a loss per share of $0.24, missing estimates by $0.02.
U.S.-based energy equipment manufacturing company GE Vernova announced it would invest approximately ₹1.4 billion (~$16 million) in India to expand its electrification manufacturing and engineering operations. The investment will be made through the company’s Indian electrification business, GE Vernova T&D India. GE Vernova T&D India operates five manufacturing facilities across India.
The Central Transmission Utility of India proposed that a minimum of 3 acre/100 MWh will be considered the benchmark for establishing a battery energy storage system (BESS) project. Land documents corresponding to a minimum of 1.5 acre/MWh, considering 50% of the land requirement, must be submitted along with applications for connectivity to the interstate transmission system network on the land route for BESS projects.
Denmark-based KK Wind Solutions, a subsidiary of A.P. Moller Holding, has commissioned a new factory in Bengaluru to manufacture power converters and control systems for the wind energy industry. The factory located in Dobbaspet on the outskirts of Bengaluru was operationalized in April 2025. The site will support engineering, manufacturing, and customer services tailored to meet growing demand in Asia and beyond.
Germany-based solar energy equipment supplier SMA Solar Technology reported a net income of €5.5 million (~$6.1 million) for the Q1 of 2025, a 80% YoY decrease of €28.5 million (~$32 million), missing analysts’ expectations. The company’s revenue decreased 9.4% to €328 million (~$368 million), falling short of the estimate of €360.3 million (~$404 million). The fall can be attributed to decreased sales in home solutions and commercial and industrial sectors.
