					</table><p>Electric vehicle manufacturer <a href="https://www.olaelectric.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ola Electric</a> has launched Ola Shakti, a residential sector-focused battery energy storage system (BESS) in four configurations.</p>
<p>The storage system will come in 1.5 kWh, 3 kWh, 5.2 kWh, and 9.1 kWh configurations.</p>
<p>Ola claims it has a charging time of two hours and a backup capacity of up to one and a half hours.</p>
<p>The energy storage systems are powered by Ola’s indigenous 4680 cell technology and its automotive battery packs.</p>
<p>Ola said the BESS&#8217; modular design allows for multi-directional stacking and easy scalability. Ola Shakti delivers automotive-grade safety and achieves industry efficiency of up to 98%, with zero operational and maintenance costs.</p>
<p>The company said its BESS’ features, including time-of-day charge/discharge scheduling, intelligent backup prioritization, and remote diagnostics, will allow customers to save money.</p>
<p>The features also include over-the-air software updates, expansion capabilities, and online operation mode for continuous energy supply.</p>
<p>Ola Shakthi will provide real-time control over battery states and energy flow to customers.</p>
<p>Ola also claimed that, unlike conventional lead-acid inverters or diesel generators, Shakti features instant 0 ms changeover time and operates across a wide input voltage range of 120 V to 290 V, protecting appliances from voltage fluctuations.</p>
<p>It said the BESS can power air conditioners, refrigerators, induction cookers, farm pumps, and communication equipment.</p>
<p>Forecasting the BESS market to expand to ₹3 trillion (~$34 billion) by 2030, Ola expects the annual consumption for its storage system to scale up to 5 GWh.</p>
<p>The board of directors and the shareholders of Ola Electric Technologies, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ola Electric Mobility, recently <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/ola-electric-subsidiary-to-raise-%E2%82%B98-77-billion-via-preferential-shares" target="_blank" rel="noopener">approved</a> a proposal to raise ₹8.77 billion (~$98.92 million) by issuing up to 877.64 million shares to Ola Cell Technologies, another subsidiary.</p>
<p>According to the newly released India’s Energy Storage Landscape 1H 2025 Report by Mercom Research, India <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/india-added-48-4-mwh-of-energy-storage-capacity-in-1h-2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">added</a> 48.4 MWh of energy storage capacity in the first half of 2025. Solar-plus-storage systems accounted for nearly 56% of India’s cumulative installed capacity. Over 12% of the BESS installed were standalone systems.</p>

					</table><p>The <a href="https://nwr.indianrailways.gov.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">North Western Railway</a> has invited bids for the installation of 7.28 MW grid-connected rooftop solar power systems at residential buildings in the Jaipur division.</p>
<p>The last date to submit bids is November 5, 2024. Bids will be opened on the same day.</p>
<p>Bidders must submit an earnest deposit of ₹1.65 million (~$19,625).</p>
<p>The project has an advertised value of ₹301.05 million (~$3.58 million).</p>
<p>The project must be completed within six months.</p>
<p>The scope of work covers the supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of rooftop solar power systems, including a wall-mounted type inverter, SPV array, module mounting structure, power conditioning unit, MPPT, controls, protections, interconnecting cables, switchgear, and the necessary features to supplement the grid power, and net meter approved by the government.</p>
<p>Bidders must have a minimum average annual contractual turnover of V/N or V, whichever is less, where V = the advertised value of the tender in rupees and N = the number of years prescribed for completion of the work for which bids have been invited.</p>
<p>The average annual contractual turnover will be calculated as the average of total contractual payments in the previous three financial years.</p>
<p>Bidders must have valid electrical contractor licenses issued by the government.</p>
<p>Bidders must have completed or substantially completed any one of the following categories of work(s) during the last seven years:</p>
<ul>
<li>Three similar works, each costing not less than 30% of the advertised value of the tender</li>
<li>Two similar works, each costing not less than 40% of the advertised value of the tender</li>
<li>One similar work costing not less than 60% of the advertised value of the tender</li>
</ul>
<p>In August, North Western Railway <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/north-western-railway-floats-tender-for-2-74-mw-rooftop-solar-systems" target="_blank" rel="noopener">issued</a> a tender for grid-connected rooftop solar systems with a cumulative capacity of 2.748 MW at platform shelters and station buildings in Jaipur.</p>
<p>In the same month, the Bikaner Division — Electrical, North Western Railway, <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/north-western-railway-invites-bids-for-2-mw-rooftop-solar-systems" target="_blank" rel="noopener">issued</a> a tender for a cumulative capacity of 2,068 kW grid-connected rooftop solar power systems at railway residential quarters.</p>

<p>According to the &#8220;Tracking the Sun 2024&#8221; report by <a href="https://www.lbl.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory</a>, the prices of residential solar systems have consistently dropped by approximately $0.1 to $0.2 per watt (W) annually, driven primarily by reductions in soft costs. In 2023, the median installed price for residential systems fell by around $0.1/W in real (inflation-adjusted) terms. This decline occurred despite inflationary pressures that have affected many other sectors of the economy.</p>
<p>In contrast, the report notes a significant shift in the non-residential sector, where median installed prices increased for the first time in 15 years, rising by $0.1 to $0.2/W. This increase is attributed to inflation and supply chain disruptions, which have had a delayed impact on non-residential projects, given their typically longer development timelines. The report suggests that while inflation has exerted upward pressure on costs, the PV sector has so far managed to mitigate these effects better than many other industries.</p>
<p><strong>Rising System Sizes and Module Efficiencies</strong></p>
<p>One of the most notable trends is the continuous increase in system sizes for residential PV installations. The median residential system size reached 7.4 kW in 2023, up from much smaller sizes seen two decades ago. This growth is largely due to declining costs, which have made larger systems more affordable, and improvements in module efficiency, which allow for greater energy generation within the same physical footprint.</p>
<p>The increase in module efficiencies is another key driver behind this trend. The report attributes efficiency gains to the growing dominance of mono-crystalline modules and ongoing innovations in cell architecture, such as Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell (PERC) technology and Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact (TOPCon) technology. These advancements have not only increased the energy yield per square foot but have also enabled reductions in balance-of-system (BoS) costs, which include components like inverters and mounting structures.</p>
<p>The report points out that the correlation between rising system sizes and module efficiency since 2010 suggests that efficiency improvements are a primary factor driving the growth in system sizes, particularly in residential settings where roof space is often limited.</p>

The report reveals that storage attachment rates have been steadily increasing, with 12% of residential and 8% of non-residential systems installed in 2023 incorporating battery storage. Hawaii leads the nation in this trend, with nearly all new PV installations in the state, including storage, driven by regulatory changes that incentivize self-consumption over grid exports.</p>
<p>California&#8217;s recent shift from Net Energy Metering (NEM) to a Net Billing Tariff (NBT) structure has profoundly impacted storage adoption. The NBT structure, which offers lower compensation for electricity exported to the grid, has created a strong financial incentive for consumers to install battery storage to maximize self-consumption. As a result, storage attachment rates for residential systems under the NBT regime have surged to approximately 60%, compared to just 10% under the previous NEM structure. This trend indicates that policy changes can significantly influence market behavior and accelerate the adoption of new technologies like battery storage.</p>

Approximately half of non-residential systems are installed on commercial properties, while one-third are on agricultural land. The report highlights that system sizes vary significantly across these segments, with the largest installations typically found in school and government facilities. In contrast, agricultural systems are much smaller, often in the 10-20 kW range.</p>
<p><strong>Third-Party Ownership Trends</strong></p>
<p>Third-party ownership (TPO) models, which include leases and power purchase agreements (PPAs), have historically played a significant role in the U.S. solar market. However, the report notes a decline in TPO&#8217;s share of residential installations since its peak at around 60% in 2012. In 2023, TPO accounted for 27% of residential systems, a slight increase from previous years. This uptick is likely due to higher interest rates on solar loans, making TPO models more attractive to consumers. The report suggests that TPO shares may continue to rise, particularly as TPO systems become eligible for higher tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act.</p>
<p>For non-residential systems, TPO shares have remained relatively stable. The report notes that TPO is more prevalent in states with high solar renewable energy certificate (SREC) prices or lucrative incentive programs, such as those in Washington D.C., Massachusetts, and New Jersey. However, some states limit TPO models or restrict eligibility for incentive programs to host-owned systems, leading to significant variability in TPO adoption across different markets.</p>
<p><strong>Variability in Installed Prices</strong></p>
<p>The report underscores the wide variability in installed prices across the U.S. market, driven by project characteristics, installer attributes, and local market conditions. For residential systems installed in 2023, the 20th to 80th percentile range for installed prices was $3.2/W to $5.5/W. For small non-residential systems, the range was $2.5/W to $4.3/W, while large non-residential systems saw prices between $1.7/W and $3.1/W.</p>
<p>Economies of scale play a significant role in this variability, particularly for larger systems. The report highlights that among residential systems, the largest installations are priced at approximately $1.0/W lower than the smallest systems, reflecting the cost efficiencies gained through larger installations. For non-residential systems, the price difference is even more pronounced, with systems larger than 1,000 kW priced $2.2/W lower than those 10 kW or smaller.</p>
<p><strong>State-Level and Installer-Level Price Differences</strong></p>
<p>The report also explores state-level differences in installed prices, noting that California, despite being the largest market, has residential prices near the national median. However, substantial price differences exist across states, reflecting variations in market size, policy environments, and local economic conditions. For example, states with smaller solar markets or specific policy drivers often exhibit higher prices due to less competition or unique market conditions.</p>
<p>At the installer level, the report finds significant variability in pricing practices. Among the top 100 residential installers in 2023, median prices ranged from $2.6/W to $5.9/W. This variability is attributed to differences in business models, vendor relationships, and local market conditions. The report suggests that while some installers offer lower prices due to efficiencies of scale or lower overhead, others may charge higher prices due to brand positioning or premium service offerings.</p>
<p>The report&#8217;s findings have important implications for the future of the U.S. solar market. The continued decline in residential PV prices, coupled with the rise in paired PV+storage systems, indicates a maturing market that is increasingly focused on energy independence and resilience.</p>
<p>However, the recent increase in non-residential prices and the wide variability in installed prices across states and installers suggest that challenges remain, particularly in managing costs and ensuring equitable access to solar energy.</p>

Demand for Larger Residential Solar Systems with Storage Rise in the US: Report

					</table><p>United States-based residential solar, battery storage, and energy services company <a href="https://www.sunrun.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sunrun</a> swung to a loss in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2023, hurt by lower sales, higher interest expense, and a non-cash investment charge.</p>
<p>The company reported a net loss of $350.1 million in Q4 2023 versus net income of $63 million in Q4 2022. Excluding the $58.6 million non-cash charge related to its investment in <a href="https://www.lunarenergy.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lunar Energy</a>, the Nasdaq-listed company recorded a loss of $291.5 million.</p>
<p>Total quarterly revenue decreased 15% year-over-year (YoY) to $516.6 million from $609.2 million last year. The decline was driven by a 47% drop in solar energy systems and product sales revenue, from $366.9 million to $195 million.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, customer agreements and incentives revenue rose 33% to $321.6 million, compared to $242.3 million last year. This resulted from Sunrun’s strategic shift towards a greater mix of solar subscriptions versus direct purchase agreements.</p>
<p>However, beyond the top-line numbers, Sunrun posted positive metrics related to its transition to a solar subscription-focused business model. Installations accelerated, with 227.1 MW of solar capacity installed in Q4, up 18% from 209.6 MW last year. Storage deployments also grew substantially, with 219.7 MWh of capacity installed in Q4, a 154% increase from 86.6 MWh in the same period last year.</p>
<p>The company added 30,005 customers in the quarter, with total customers reaching 933,275, up 17% YoY. During the quarter, it launched a pilot to offer customers the ability to renew their subscription agreements early and extend the price protection.</p>
<p>The company also announced a preferred retail partnership with home improvement retailer <a href="https://www.lowes.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lowe’s</a>. Sunrun said it is staffing more than 260 Lowe’s stores in 10 states with its representatives to guide customers in accessing residential solar.</p>
<p><strong>Full Year 2023</strong></p>
<p>Sunrun’s full-year (FY) net loss widened significantly in 2023, primarily due to a $1.2 billion goodwill <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/sunrun-loss-driven-by-goodwill-impairment-charges" target="_blank" rel="noopener">impairment charge</a> taken in Q3 due to a decline in its stock price, which has fallen by 35% in the past 12 months.</p>
<p>Net loss attributable to shareholders was $1.6 billion in 2023, compared to net income of $173.4 million in 2022. Excluding the impairment charge, it was $387.8 million.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the total FY revenue decreased 3% to $2.26 billion, from $2.32 billion in 2022. The decline was largely due to a 20% drop in solar energy systems and product sales revenue, from $1.34 billion to $1.07 billion, partially offset by a 21% rise in customer agreements and incentives revenue, from $983 million to $1.19 billion. Higher revenue and operating expenses costs also contributed to the decline.</p>
<p>According to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, new residential solar installations in the U.S. had a median size of 7.2 kW in 2022, a significant <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/reduced-cost-residential-solar-growth-in-the-us" target="_blank" rel="noopener">jump</a> from the 2.4 kW seen in 2000, thanks to cost reductions and improved module efficiencies.</p>
