India’s installed solar capacity has surpassed 100 GW, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has announced.

As of January 31, 2025, the installed solar capacity has reached 100.33 GW, Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi said.

According to an MNRE release, 84.10 GW of solar installations are under implementation, and 47.49 GW are under tendering. Solar now contributes 47% of the total renewable energy capacity.

In 2024, India added 24.5 GW of solar installations, an over two-fold increase compared to 2023. Utility-scale installations reached 18.5 GW capacity, up 2.8 times from 2023.

India’s hybrid and round-the-clock renewable energy projects are also advancing rapidly, with 64.67 GW under implementation and tendered, bringing the cumulative solar and hybrid projects to 296.59 GW.

Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh contributed most to India’s total utility-scale solar installations.

Rooftop solar installations reached 4.59 GW in capacity, a 53% increase compared to 2023, with the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana contributing significantly to the rapid installation growth, with nearly 900,000 households installing rooftop solar systems as on date.

The Surya Ghar program has set a target of installing rooftop solar systems in 10 million households by 2027.

India added 16.4 GW of solar capacity in the first nine months of 2024, a 167% year-over-year increase from 6.2 GW, according to Mercom India Research’s Q3 2024 India Solar Market Update.

Last August, Joshi said India was well positioned to install 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030.

The government has set a target of achieving 280 GW of installed solar capacity by 2030.

The solar manufacturing sector has also increased by 2,900% from 2 GW capacity in 2014 to 60 GW in 2024. India is expected to achieve a solar module production capacity of 100 GW by 2030, the MNRE release said.
