Ddev Plastiks Ventures into BESS Manufacturing with 5 GWh Initial Capacity

Kolkata-based Ddev Plastiks, a manufacturer of specialty compounds, has announced a foray into battery energy storage system (BESS) manufacturing with initial plans to set up a 5 GWh plant.
The manufacturing facility, using lithium-ion (li-ion) technology, will be set up in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Commissioning will be in phases based on market demand.
The project involves an investment of up to ₹1.5 billion (~$16.6 million).
Ddev Plastiks said it will leverage cutting-edge li-ion technology with agreements for tech transfer from leading overseas partners to ensure global standards.
The BESS solutions will serve utility-scale projects as well as commercial and industrial applications.
Alongside BESS, the company will provide integrated energy management solutions and after-sales support services.
Ddev Plastiks said the BESS manufacturing initiative aligns well with India’s growing focus on energy storage integration to address the intermittency of renewable energy.
The company stated that a key feature of this initiative will be the development of a research and development center, focused on advanced battery technologies and innovative energy storage solutions to strengthen its technological capabilities and market positioning.
The new BESS business segment is expected to contribute to the company’s revenues starting from the second half of the financial year 2027.
Ddev Plastiks also manufactures polymer compounds used in a wide range of renewable and electrical applications, like wires and cables.
BESS manufacturing in India is at a nascent stage, but the government is pushing for increasing domestic capacity. The Ministry of Power has directed states and procuring entities to ensure a minimum of 20% local content in the procurement of BESS projects being implemented under the viability gap funding program.
The government has also advised all renewable energy implementing agencies and state utilities to incorporate a minimum two-hour co-located energy storage system equivalent to 10% of the installed solar capacity into all solar tenders.
India’s cumulative installed energy storage capacity reached 490 MWh by the end of June 2025, according to India’s Energy Storage Landscape 1H 2025 Report by Mercom India Research.
