Religious institutions across India are increasingly turning to solar energy to meet their energy needs and showcase their commitment to cutting down their carbon footprint.

One of the more recent examples is the Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple in Delhi, which has embraced clean energy by installing an 80 kW grid-connected rooftop solar system at the shrine.

This solar project is expected to produce approximately 8,400 units of electricity each month, totaling around 100,800 units annually. This generation is expected to result in yearly savings of ₹806,000 (~$9,459).

The system was installed by Delhi-based rooftop solar engineering, procurement, and construction company Exolar Energy and features 136 TOPCon bifacial solar modules from Vikram Solar paired with grid-tied inverters from Luminous.

“A rooftop solar system aligns with our temple’s values and commitment to preserving nature. Our experience with Exolar Energy has been smooth and fulfilling. We hope this initiative inspires more communities to adopt eco-friendly practices,” said a Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple Committee spokesperson.

Arvind Kumar, Founder of Exolar Energy, added, “It’s heartening to see spiritual centers across India turning to solar energy—not just for operational needs but as a tribute to nature.”

“As India works toward a solar energy capacity of 132 GW by March 2026, these efforts are symbolic and strategic. Every rooftop counts, and when places of worship take the lead, it encourages communities to rethink their role in sustainability,” he added.

The Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple joins a growing list of religious institutions committed to sustainability through solar energy adoption.

Ohms Energy recently installed solar projects ranging from 20 kW to 1,100 kW at religious sites, including Chinmaya Mission, Anoopam Mission, Satyanarayan Goenka Bhavan in Maharashtra, and Sri Satya Sai Trust in Telangana.

Back in 2022, the Swaminarayan Akshardham temple complex in Gandhinagar installed ten portable rooftop solar systems with a total output of 2.4 kW.
