					</table><p>China’s total installed solar generation capacity reached 1,234 GW by the end of February 2026, and wind generation capacity reached 650 GW, increasing 33.2% and 22.8% year-over-year (YoY), respectively, according to the country’s National Energy Administration (<a href="http://www.nea.gov.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NEA</a>).</p>

<p>The total installed power generation capacity as of February 2026 stood at 3,950 GW, rising 15.9% YoY.</p>
<p>The country had <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/strong-solar-buildout-pushes-chinas-power-capacity-to-3890-gw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">added</a> 311 GW of solar and 119 GW of wind power capacity in 2025. In all, it installed an additional 543 GW of new energy capacity from both conventional and renewable sources during the year, a 16.1% YoY increase. Cumulative solar capacity reached 1,200 GW, up 35.4% YoY, and wind 640 GW, rising 22.9% YoY. The two sources combined overtook thermal power capacity (1,500 GW) by over 300 GW.</p>
<p>Last September, China <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/china-targets-3-6-tw-wind-and-solar-capacity-by-2035?" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> its new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets for 2035, aiming to expand the country’s installed wind and solar capacity to 3.6 TW. The new targets for wind and solar capacities are over six times their 2020 targets.</p>
<p>The revised NDCs will also make new energy vehicles mainstream in new vehicle sales. They also aim to reduce economy-wide net greenhouse gas emissions by 7% to 10% from peak levels and increase the share of non-fossil fuels in total energy consumption to over 30%.</p>
<p>The country’s total installed energy storage capacity <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/chinas-installed-energy-storage-capacity-reached-213-3-gw-in-2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reached</a> 213.3 GW, increasing 54% YoY, according to preliminary data from the China Energy Storage Alliance. The country has achieved its energy storage installation target two years ahead of time.</p>
<p>Pumped storage capacity accounted for 31.3% of the total energy storage capacity. New energy technologies, particularly lithium batteries, experienced significant growth. Lithium batteries made up more than two-thirds of the total energy capacity installed in 2025, according to Chen Haisheng, Chairman at the Zhongguancun Energy Storage Industry Technology Alliance. China’s total installed capacity of new energy storage (using technologies such as lithium batteries) reached 144.7 GW, up 85% YoY.</p>

					</table><p>China added 12.6 GW of solar power capacity in October 2025, rebounding after dipping to almost a three-year low in August. This is also a clear step up from September’s 9.66 GW, based on the <a href="http://www.nea.gov.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Energy Administration&#8217;s</a> data.</p>
<p>Even so, October’s buildout was still well below the 20.4 GW recorded in the same month last year.</p>
<p>The final quarter is usually the busiest stretch for China’s solar industry, with project completions accelerating toward December. This year has looked different as the National Energy Administration and National Development and Reform Commission announced a sustainable pricing mechanism for renewable energy projects selling power to the grid through market-based bidding in each region.</p>
<p>That pull-forward effect left demand heavily front-loaded, contributing to a sharp slowdown over the summer, with installations only starting to pick up again from September onward.</p>
<p>The China Photovoltaic Industry Association had <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/chinas-solar-growth-to-dip-in-2025-post-market-aligned-pricing-reforms/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noted</a> that solar installations will likely decline in 2025 with the introduction of market-based pricing reforms. China had relied on a feed-in tariff regime to ramp up renewable energy capacity at a staggering pace.</p>

<p>As of the end of October, China’s cumulative installed power generation capacity reached 3,750 GW, up 17.3% year-on-year (YoY). Of this total, solar power installed capacity was 1,140 GW, up 43.8% YoY; wind power installed capacity was 590 GW, up 21.4% YoY.</p>
<p>From January to October, the average cumulative utilization of power generation equipment nationwide was 2,619 hours, 260 hours lower than the same period last year.</p>
<p>China <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/china-adds-28-gw-of-solar-capacity-in-q3-2025-down-52-yoy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">added</a> 28.06 GW of solar power capacity in the third quarter of 2025, a 52% YoY decrease from 58.4 GW.</p>
<p>China recently <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/china-targets-3-6-tw-wind-and-solar-capacity-by-2035/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">unveiled</a> its updated Nationally Determined Contributions for 2035, setting an ambitious target to expand installed wind and solar power capacity to 3.6 TW, more than six times its 2020 goal.</p>
<p>The new plan also seeks to make new energy vehicles mainstream in new car sales, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 7–10% from peak levels, and raise the share of non-fossil fuels in total energy consumption to over 30%.</p>


China’s Solar Growth Rebounds in October with 12.6 GW New Capacity

<p>Its solar installations for the first nine months (9M) of 2025 totaled 240.27 GW, a 50% YoY increase from 160.88 GW.</p>
<p>China added 61.1 GW of wind and 56.7 GW of thermal capacity in 9M 2025. The country also added 7.2 GW of hydropower capacity and 1.5 GW of nuclear capacity.</p>
<p>As of the end of September, the total installed power generation capacity reached 3,717 GW.</p>
<p>China <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/china-adds-152-gw-of-solar-capacity-in-q2-2025-up-three-times-yoy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">added</a> 152.5 GW of solar power capacity in the second quarter of 2025, a 168.8% YoY growth from 56.74 GW. Its solar installations for the first half of 2025 totaled 212.21 GW, a 107% YoY increase from 102.48 GW in the same period last year.</p>

<p>Additionally, China will expand its national carbon trading market to include more high-emission sectors.</p>
<p>Announcing the targets at the United Nations Climate Summit in New York, President Xi Jinping emphasized that the global green transition should promote equitable development between the Global North and South. He reiterated that developed nations must lead in emission reductions and provide financial and technological support to developing countries.</p>
<p>According to the &#8220;Special Action Plan for Large-Scale Construction of New Energy Storage (2025–2027) <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/china-targets-180-gw-of-energy-storage-capacity-by-2027" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released</a> by China&#8217;s National Development and Reform Commission, the nation has also set a target to install over 180 GW of energy storage capacity by 2027, up from 95 GW as of June this year.</p>


China Adds 28 GW of Solar Capacity in Q3 2025, Down 52% YoY

<p>China added 30.11 GW of new solar capacity in 2019. Large-scale projects made up 17.91 GW and 12.2 GW of installations was through distributed projects, according to the official statistics released by China’s National Energy Administration (NEA).</p>
<p>According to the latest statistics, installations declined by  31.9% year-over-year (YoY), compared to 2018, which saw <a href="https://mercomindia.com/china-installs-44-gw-solar-capacity-cy-2018/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">44.26 GW</a> of solar installations.</p>
<p>From January to September 2019, the country <a href="https://mercomindia.com/china-solar-installation-dip-9m-2019/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">added</a> 16 GW of solar capacity, a decrease of 45% YoY from the 44 GW of capacity added in the same period in 2018, as reported previously by Mercom.</p>
<p>Cumulative solar installations stood at 174 GW at the end of 2019.</p>
<p>According to the NEA, the newly installed capacity in North China was 8.58 GW, while South China’s new installed capacity was 4.72 GW.</p>

<p>In 2019, the country’s photovoltaic power generation reached 224.3 million MWh, an increase of 26.3% year-on-year. The photovoltaic utilization hours were 1,169 hours, showing an increase of 54 hours.</p>
<p><a href="https://mercomindia.com/aceca-china-likely-install-23-31-gw-solar-2020/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">In January 2020</a>, a report by Asia Europe Clean Energy (Solar) Advisory Co. Ltd (AECEA), pointed out that 2020 may not be much different from 2019, with grid parity being the priority followed by utility-scale, distributed PV and residential PV projects. The AECEA report further noted that the other area of growth would be the ‘solar storage charging,’ which can be used to charge electric vehicles, and has been put into use in various provinces during 2019. The EV market is growing at a rapid rate, and the estimated electricity consumption by EVs, which was approximately 5 TWh in 2019, would increase to 32 TWh by 2025.</p>
<p>Currently, the Chinese solar industry and its economy are reeling due to the outbreak of the deadly Coronavirus. The pandemic has claimed thousands of lives, and its impact on the country’s solar industry and its exports are yet to be gauged fully.</p>
<p>Amid the increasing doubt on the supply chains due to the spread of the deadly virus in China, the Indian <a href="https://finmin.nic.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Ministry of Finance</a> has issued a <a href="https://mercomindia.com/coronavirus-covered-under-force-majeure-clause-ministry-of-finance/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">clarification</a> that Coronavirus will be covered in the force majeure clause and would be considered as a case of natural calamity.</p>

China Added Over 30 GW of Solar Capacity in 2019

<p>In the calendar year (CY) 2019, China is estimated to have installed 30 GW of solar capacity, a decline of 32% year-over-year (YoY) compared to 2018, when 44 GW of solar was installed according to the latest figures by China’s National Energy Administration (<a href="http://www.nea.gov.cn/2020-01/20/c_138720877.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">NEA</a>).</p>
<p>China’s cumulative solar installed capacity now stands at 205 GW.</p>
<p>According to NEA, these figures imply that in December alone, up to 12 GW capacity was deployed, exceeding the 11.4 GW installed during the entire first half of 2019. At that time, China’s cumulative installed solar capacity <a href="https://mercomindia.com/china-adds-11-gw-of-solar-added-in-first-half-of-2019/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">was at 186 GW</a>.</p>
<p>According to Asia Europe Clean Energy (Solar) Advisory Co. Ltd. (<a href="http://www.aecea.com.de/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">AECEA)</a> Director Frank Haugwitz, AECEA was not expecting that 12 GW will be installed in December 2019 due to several reasons and also given the fairly low installations numbers in October (1 GW) and November (nearly 0.5 GW).</p>
<p>“A year-end rally is nothing unusual, however up to 12 GW in one single month, still beats all estimates. One factor which might have contributed to the spike in installations could be because projects that received approval up to 2-3 years ago are now taking advantage of the competitive module and system prices and were finally executed,” Haugwitz said.</p>

<p>According to Haugwitz, “30 GW is far better than what was anticipated, and given the tailwind, AECEA is currently revising its 2020 estimate. Early indications suggest that during 2020, the Chinese PV market will experience a rebound, possibly in the order of 15-25% YoY,” he added.</p>
<p>Recently Mercom reported that AECAE was <a href="https://mercomindia.com/aceca-china-likely-install-23-31-gw-solar-2020/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">cautiously optimistic</a> about the solar sector next year, and it expected 23-31 GW capacity to be deployed during 2020.</p>
<p>In May 2018, the Chinese government abruptly <a href="https://mercomindia.com/major-policy-change-china-affect-global-solar/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">decided</a> to stop approving any new renewable projects until further notice. Back then, just half-way through the 13<sup>th</sup> five-year plan, the country had exceeded its official solar PV target of 105 GW by 2020 by nearly 47%.</p>
<p>In November 2019, it was reported that NEA <a href="https://mercomindia.com/china-solar-installation-dip-9m-2019/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">announced</a> that between January to September 2019, China added 16 GW of solar capacity, showing a decrease of 45% YoY.</p>

With Over 12 GW of Solar Deployed in December Alone, China Installed 30 GW in 2019

<p>China’s National Energy Administration <a href="http://www.nea.gov.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">(NEA</a>) has announced that between January to September 2019, the country added 16 GW of solar capacity, a decrease of 45% year-over-year (YoY) from the 44 GW of capacity added in the same period last year.</p>
<p>The 16 GW of capacity added in the first nine months of the year includes 7.73 GW of ground-mounted utility-scale projects and 8.26 GW of distributed solar systems.</p>
<p>Asia Europe Clean Energy (Solar) Advisory Co. Ltd (ACECA) notes that, during the third quarter, just 4.59 GW was installed compared to ~ 10 GW in 2018.</p>
<p>According to AECEA Director Frank Haugwitz, the reasons for this significant reduction in installations include, “the relatively late releases and decisions of policies and approved capacities, meeting relatively long lead times to develop a new project, new approaches like a national unified bidding system, continuously falling module prices, which may have induced developers ignoring an RMB 0.01/kWh  (~$0.00141) higher feed-in-tariff (FiT) if installed before December 31, 2019, among others.”</p>
<p>On May 20, 2019, a total of 14.78 GW of grid-parity projects were approved, and on July 10, 2019, a further 22.78 GW of FiT-supported projects were officially announced in China.</p>
<p>In January 2019, China’s NEA came up with the report, which provided the first indication of how the domestic PV market is expected to evolve in the future, especially during 2019/2020. The market is in <a href="https://mercomindia.com/china-feed-in-tariff-levels-solar/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">a transition phase</a> from a 100% subsidy-driven phase towards a 100% subsidy-free phase starting January 1, 2021, which also coincides with the 14<sup>th</sup> Five-Year-Plan (2021-2025).</p>

<p>Capacity deployment fell even though 920 MW of residential PV systems were deployed in September alone, exceeding the official full-year target of 3.5 GW by about 700 MW (4.27 GW).</p>
<p>AECEA also noted that the cumulative solar power capacity as of September 2019 stood at 190 GW, which is higher than the 13th Five-Year-Plan (2016-2020) target of 105 GW by a good 80%. AECEA expects up to 5 GW of residential PV systems to be installed between January and October 2019 as they are still eligible for RMB 0.18/kWh FiT if installed before October 31.  Residential PV may enjoy FiTs even beyond 2021, the note added.</p>
<p>The newly installed capacity in the north and northeast China is about 5 GW and 512 MW respectively, the northwest region saw installations of 4.3 GW, and in east China, there were installations of 3.3 GW. Central China installed 1.8 GW while in southern China, the installations were around 955 MW.</p>
<p>Previously, Mercom <a href="https://mercomindia.com/china-fit-solar-projects-22-gw/">reported</a> that the NEA approved 22.78 GW of Feed-in Tariff (FiT) based on solar projects in China. These solar PV projects are expected to be grid-connected by December 2019. They have been approved under China’s first national unified bidding for solar projects seeking feed-in-tariffs. A total of 4,338 solar PV projects with a combined capacity of 24.55 GW were proposed to be developed, but only 3,921 projects totaling 22.78 GW had received the official approval. Apart from these, 417 proposed solar projects with a capacity of approximately 1.77 GW had not been approved.</p>
<p>In <a href="https://mercomindia.com/china-cumulative-installed-solar-nea/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">June 2019</a>, China’s cumulative installed solar capacity stood at nearly 180 GW, the country added around 5.2 GW of new solar projects in the first quarter of 2019.</p>
<p>China is the <a href="https://mercomindia.com/india-third-largest-solar-market-q1-2019/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">largest</a> solar market in the world, followed by the U.S. and India.</p>
