					</table><p>In a new study, scientists at the <a href="https://www.titech.ac.jp/english" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tokyo Institute of Technology </a>used two lithium-based solid electrolyte chemical compositions to ensure stable ionic movement in millimeter-thick battery electrodes.</p>
<p>Solid electrolytes are much stabler compared to liquid electrolytes. Argyrodite-type (Li6PS5CI) and Tetragonal Li 10 GeP 2 S 12, abbreviated as LGPS, are the two compositions used by Ryoji Kanno of the institute to increase the complexity of the superionic crystals.</p>
<p>The study published in <a href="https://www.science.org/journal/science" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Science</a> highlights that compared to liquid electrolytes conventionally used in commercial batteries, solid electrolytes are less prone to overheating, fire, and loss of charge, ultimately degrading the battery&#8217;s performance over time.</p>
<p>However, the scientists found that the tough structure of solid electrolytes leads to wetting of the cathode in the battery, limiting the supply of lithium ions to the cathode.</p>
<p>The researchers used a multi-substitution method and modified the LGPS type while synthesizing a series of crystals with a composition of a lithium-ion conductor with a garnet-like structure that is being studied for its potential use in all-solid-state batteries.</p>
<p>The area-specific capacities were 1.8 and 5.3 times larger for the values obtained compared to the discharge capacities attained in all solid-state lithium batteries in previous experiments.</p>
<p>Kanno said, &#8220;In effect, the proposed design rule lays a solid groundwork for exploring new superionic conductors with superior charge–discharge performance, even at room temperature. Many studies have shown that inorganic ionic conductors tend to show better ion conductivity after multi-element substitution probably because of the flattened potential barrier of Li-ion migration, which is essential for better ion conductivity.&#8221;</p>
<p>Another <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/disordered-multi-metals-boost-battery-performance" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study </a>by the United States’ Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory reported that solid-state batteries with the disordered arrangement of metals in electrolytes improve the battery&#8217;s performance by increasing the flow of ions, which creates an electrical charge.</p>
<p>In a similar experiment, researchers from Purdue University <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/solid-electrolytes-lend-thermal-stability" target="_blank" rel="noopener">engineered</a> a new composite solid-electrolyte by introducing a new material that they claimed provides thermal stability to solid-state lithium-ion batteries, which achieves higher energy density.</p>

Scientists Use New Lithium Electrolyte Compositions to Boost Battery Stability

					</table><p>Scientists at the <a href="http://www.iitkgp.ac.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur</a>, have used nanomaterials to develop sodium-ion (Na-ion) batteries and supercapacitors that can be integrated into e-cycles for rapid charging.</p>
<p>The aim of the research supported by the Department of Science and Technology (<a href="https://dst.gov.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DST</a>) is to reduce the cost of e-cycles using low-cost technologies based on Na-ion. A few patents on using these Na-ion-based batteries in e-cycles are already in the pipeline.</p>
<p>The research on supercapacitors was published in the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/journal-of-power-sources" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Journal of Power Sources</a>.</p>
<p>Of the fewer suitable materials used to manufacture batteries, sodium has a high natural abundance on the planet. The availability of sodium also makes it a potential alternative to largely used lithium-ion batteries, as Na-ion-based batteries have enhanced performance and can be scaled up to mass production for industrial operations.</p>
<p>The researchers synthesized sodium iron phosphates and sodium manganese phosphates (NaMnPO4) to obtain sodium-ion batteries and supercapacitors. Compared to other reported metal oxides, the electrochemical performance of NaMnPO4 shows a much more stable tolerance towards varying magnetic fields.</p>
<p>The team is conducting the economic viability of their research. With further study, Na-ion-based e-cycles can be made available to the general public for ₹10,000-15,000 (~$126-$190), making them 25% cheaper than e-cycles based on lithium-ion storage technologies.</p>
<p>During the study, the IIT team discovered that the sodium-ion cell could be discharged to zero volts, similar to a capacitor, making it a safer alternative than many other storage technologies. The quick charging feature of the Na-ion batteries encouraged the team to integrate power e-cycles with sodium batteries, an easy and affordable substitute for lithium-ion.</p>
<p>The team also observed that disposing of Na-ion-based batteries is simple, which would help promote green transport and address the challenges of climate change.</p>
<p>In another experiment, scientists at the Beijing University of Technology <a href="https://mercomindia.com/researchers-develop-stable-anode-material/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> to have synthesized a series of phosphorous(P)-/tin (Sn)-based composites that have anode materials with higher capacity and improved stability. The synthesis enabled a sodium-ion battery with a capacity retention of 97.7% after 50 cycles.</p>
<p>Indian scientists <a href="https://mercomindia.com/indian-scientists-supercapacitors-electrode-material/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">developed</a> a low-cost supercapacitor device in 2020, which exhibited excellent capacitive retention using a novel electrode material. The team developed a scalable and affordable electrochemical process to synthesize Nickel Cobaltite (NiCo2O4) electrodes containing nanosheet structures incorporated with oxygen vacancies as an active material for hybrid supercapacitors.</p>

Indian Scientists Develop Sodium-ion Batteries for E-Cycles Using Nanomaterials

<p><a href="https://epsiloncarbon.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Epsilon Carbon</a>, a coal chemical processing company, announced that it plans to invest $70 million (~₹5.2 billion) over the next five years towards establishing 50,000 tons of anode material manufacturing capacity in the country by 2025.</p>
<p>The Mumbai-based company said that it would diversify into the battery material business to develop and manufacture carbon products for the anode components of lithium-ion batteries.</p>
<p>Epsilon said that its battery materials wing would be set up under a new subsidiary &#8211; Epsilon Advanced Materials, which has already commissioned production in the country to produce 5,000 tons of anode material annually. The company plans to triple this capacity by 2021 and plans to achieve a production capacity of 50,000 tons per year by 2025. Epsilon Advanced Materials was set up to supply synthetic graphite material to cell manufacturers and energy storage device companies.</p>
<p>The company also stated that it had started trials with anode material producers and cell manufacturers globally to start the qualification phase.</p>
<p>Lithium-ion batteries are some of the most commonly used batteries in electronic devices and electric vehicles. The anode is the electrode of a battery that releases electrons during discharge. Lithium-ion batteries use anodes made out of graphite, a carbon-based material.</p>
<p>In March, United States-based XNRGI <a href="https://mercomindia.com/us-based-xnrgi-lithium-ion-factory-gurugram/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">announced</a> that the company opened a high-temperature lithium-ion battery factory in Gurugram in India that can produce 240 MWh of battery production capacity. The factory will be spread across 45,000 square feet of land. It said it also has aggressive plans to scale capacity worldwide in the multi GWh range by 2022 with strategic relationships in different parts of the world.</p>
<p>In December 2019, Ather Energy <a href="https://mercomindia.com/ather-energy-ev-li-ion-battery-tamil-nadu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">announced</a> that it signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Tamil Nadu to set up a two-wheeled electric vehicle and lithium-ion battery manufacturing facility. The 400,000 square feet factory will be located at Hosur. The company added that it has plans to expand its products and services to 30 more cities over the next few years.</p>
