					</table>India’s micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are increasingly turning to clean energy solutions such as rooftop solar, but access to finance remains a decisive factor shaping adoption.
Bankers highlighted that while lending frameworks for such projects are evolving, borrowers must navigate interest-rate volatility, documentation requirements, and realistic project expectations to secure funding.
Lenders also emphasize that access to capital is improving, though loan approvals still depend on creditworthiness, cash flow stability, and careful project planning rather than on technology alone.
Lending Structure and Credit Assessment
Banks currently do not offer a standardized “green loan” category for MSMEs; instead, they route renewable energy projects through existing SME lending frameworks. Interest rates vary based on internal assessments, borrower profiles, and financial history.
Amit Kanhai, Assistant General Manager (AGM) at <a href="https://bankofindia.bank.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bank of India</a>, explained that rates are linked to internal and external credit ratings and typically range from 8.6% to 8.9% for most borrowers, with slight variations based on risk.
External credit ratings are not mandatory for most MSMEs unless exposure exceeds ₹500 million (~$5.28 million), allowing smaller enterprises to rely on internal evaluations based on experience, financials, and repayment capacity.
Similarly, <a href="https://www.idbi.bank.in/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IDBI Bank</a> follows a risk-based approach. Deputy General Manager Abhishek Mishra noted that interest rates are not fixed and depend on “credibility, banking behavior, and credit scores,” generally starting at around 8.9% and rising with risk.
Collateral-free lending is widely available at both institutions, reducing barriers to entry for MSMEs exploring rooftop solar or other clean energy options.
Timelines, Documentation, and Role of EPCs
Loan processing timelines are relatively short when proposals are well-structured. Lenders indicate that approvals can be completed within 10 to 20 days, provided the documentation is complete and the project details are credible.
A key factor influencing approval is the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) partner. Banks rely heavily on the quality of project reports and cost estimates submitted by these vendors. Mishra emphasized that borrowers should prioritize efficiency over low pricing, as unrealistic or aggressive quotations often lead to delays or closer scrutiny.
Cash flow analysis remains central to decision-making. Banks primarily assess whether existing business revenues can support loan repayment over time, making conservative projections essential for faster approvals.
Borrower Risks
Both lenders flagged over-optimism as the most common mistake among MSMEs intending to adopt clean energy. Borrowers often overestimate savings or system performance without factoring in long-term variability.
Mishra felt that while lenders may appear conservative, this caution protects borrowers from financial stress, particularly over the project&#8217;s lifecycle. Kanhai added that overestimating capacity or returns can weaken repayment ability, making realistic planning critical.
Another frequent issue is poor partner selection. Enterprises often prioritize lower-cost vendors without assessing long-term reliability, even though system performance directly affects financial outcomes.
Financial Gains and Future Outlook
Despite these challenges, lenders pointed to clear financial benefits for adopters. Many MSMEs have significantly reduced electricity expenses, improving operating margins and competitiveness in tight markets.
Government-backed programs are further strengthening the financing ecosystem. Under the agriculture infrastructure fund, eligible enterprises can access loans of up to ₹20 million (~$211,185) at capped interest rates, with effective rates dropping to nearly 6% after subsidies. These loans are also largely collateral-free, supported by government guarantees.
Demand for renewable energy financing has risen steadily over the past few years, with lenders observing a clear shift in business behavior. As Mishra noted, the transition is established, with adoption now driven by both cost savings and competitive pressure.
The discussions at Mercom India’s Bhopal C&amp;I Clean Energy Meet focused on financing challenges for MSMEs, where lenders outlined the evolving landscape of clean energy funding and the growing readiness of businesses to invest in it.

					</table>India’s commercial and industrial (C&amp;I) consumers are accelerating their adoption of renewable energy to manage rising electricity costs, improve energy security, and meet sustainability goals. Increasing power tariffs are pushing businesses toward rooftop solar and green open access solutions to lower costs and reduce their carbon footprint. Many businesses are also considering battery storage where financially viable to overcome the intermittency of renewables.
Madhya Pradesh ranks eighth among Indian states in cumulative installed open-access solar capacity, accounting for 23% of its large-scale solar installations.
Solar open access capacity in the state grew 142% year-over-year in 2025, reflecting strong demand from C&amp;I consumers. With a target of achieving 50% renewable energy in its power mix by 2030 and supportive policies, clean power procurement is expected to increase further in the state.
Industry experts discuss the benefits, adoption pathways, and outlook of renewable energy and battery storage for C&amp;I businesses in India, with a focus on Madhya Pradesh.
Consumer Behavior
C&amp;I consumers typically adopt renewable energy in phases, depending on their consumption patterns and contracted demand.
Sudheer Garimella, General Manager, Business Development at <a href="https://www.candi.solar/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Candi Solar</a>, said customers must assess their power consumption pattern and sanctioned load. They generally opt first for rooftop or ground-mounted solar systems on their premises. Customers can use net metering if their power load is not continuous or their contracted demand is up to 1 MW.
If their contracted demand exceeds 1 MW, many opt for behind-the-meter systems to source power from captive projects. Open access mode is typically adopted after these options are exhausted, allowing consumers to size projects based on hourly demand.
“The economics of solar energy have reached a stage where it has become highly attractive to customers,” said Garimella.
He added that sustainability requirements and export market dynamics, particularly in Europe, are influencing adoption. Businesses using renewable energy can secure better pricing for their products in international markets.
Those with a constant power load will end up adopting solar energy; it is no longer an option, given the financial savings.
Nitin Jain, General Manager-Business Development at <a href="https://inoxclean.com/inox-neo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Inox Neo Energies</a>, said battery energy storage is shifting from a secondary technology to a primary one. Storage systems allow businesses to store solar energy generated during the day and use it during peak tariff periods. With time-of-day tariffs increasing in several states, this strategy improves cost savings.
“Apart from cost savings, businesses using green energy to manufacture their products can command better pricing in export markets,” Jain said, noting a potential $1–$2 price advantage in Europe.
He added that the adoption of renewables also supports carbon credit generation and helps companies meet environmental, social, and governance goals.
Optimal Routes for Solar Adoption
Solar project sizing depends on consumption patterns and operational requirements.
For net-metered systems, sizing is typically based on monthly energy consumption. For captive and behind-the-meter systems, hourly load patterns are critical because generated energy must be consumed immediately..
“Project planning must be based on the date and hourly load patterns. Typically, we have observed that in-house solar projects can range from smaller kilowatt capacities to 15-20 MW, with many businesses expanding installations in phases to match their contracted demand,” said Garimella.
Demand in Madhya Pradesh
Garimella highlighted that in Madhya Pradesh, sectors such as textiles are increasingly utilizing available rooftop and land space to expand solar capacity.
However, adoption of open access remains limited compared to rooftop installations.
Jain said power demand in Madhya Pradesh has increased significantly year-over-year. However, industries have not shifted enough toward green energy open access. Such industries in the state still largely favor rooftop solar systems. This is because of land scarcity and connectivity challenges.
However, he highlighted the state government’s 2025 policy, which <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/madhya-pradesh-targets-meeting-50-of-power-needs-from-renewables-by-2030?utm_source" target="_blank" rel="noopener">provides</a> up to a 50% waiver on wheeling charges, reimbursement of stamp duty, and exemption from electricity duty for 10 years. All these policies are helping make the open access environment in Madhya Pradesh more reliable.
Jain noted that open access is cheaper than fossil fuels. “If consumers go for the hybrid renewable energy option, they will be relying on a more sustainable, reliable, and convenient source.”
Routes for Installing Solar
Discussing capital requirements for installing solar projects, Garimella stated that financing is no longer a constraint for setting up such systems.
Businesses can adopt the capital expenditure model for smaller systems or opt for the operational expenditure model, in which developers install and operate systems and supply power through long-term power purchase agreements.
For open-access projects under group captive plans, consumers typically contribute about 26% of the equity, with the remainder funded by developers.
Garimella said Candi Solar offers support through its performance-linked loan model for solar system installations. Under this model, businesses can avail depreciation and tax benefits for installing the solar projects. Candi Solar provides 100% project financing under this model and assumes execution, performance, and operational risks. Businesses pay for the energy they consume. “Businesses can also avail low-interest financing from banks to install renewable systems if they have decent creditworthiness.”
Demand for RTC Power
Garimella said the market demand for renewable energy began with solar; however, most corporates are now looking for round-the-clock (RTC) renewable energy. “This is where battery storage comes into the picture, as this is the only way you can store solar energy and use it during off-solar hours.”
He noted that while wind energy can support RTC supply, its availability varies by region. As a result, solar-plus-storage solutions are becoming more relevant across states.
Battery storage is currently more prevalent in utility-scale projects but is expected to become viable at the industrial level as costs decline.
Battery storage systems are emerging as an attractive alternative to diesel generators.
Garimella added that compared to diesel-based backup, batteries reduce fossil fuel consumption, offer better operational stability, and can support regular operations rather than just backup needs. “If consumers combine daytime solar with a battery today, it will cost them less than the grid prices. Individually, batteries may be costlier. However, their prices will eventually reduce.”
Inox is developing a 100-MW solar-plus-storage park in Madhya Pradesh. Jain added that savings from such projects will be at least ₹2 (~$0.021)/kWh to ₹3 (~$0.032)/kWh compared to distribution company tariffs.
He stated that the RTC power provided by battery storage projects can enhance consumers’ financial credibility and help them access green financing.
However, Jain added that despite the growing usage of battery storage in India, the country’s supply chain for such systems is completely dependent on China. Due to a lack of technology transfer, Indian companies are mostly assembling the battery systems.

Madhya Pradesh C&I Businesses Poised for Rooftop Solar, Open Access Adoption

					</table>Tamil Nadu’s commercial and industrial (C&amp;I) renewable energy market is entering a more mature phase, where the discourse is shifting from simple tariff savings to long-term strategy, infrastructure planning, and export competitiveness.
As of December 2025, renewable energy accounted for 57.5% of Tamil Nadu’s power mix, with solar at 20% and wind at 29%, while thermal power contributes 39%. Yet, despite renewables crossing the 50% threshold, industry experts believe the state’s C&amp;I sector still has significant room to deepen clean energy adoption, especially through rooftop solar, open access, and emerging storage solutions.
Rooftop Solar
According to Sudheer Garimella, General Manager, Business Development at <a href="https://www.candi.solar/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Candi Solar</a>, the economic viability of solar is no longer debated. “From a tariff standpoint, solar is a no-brainer,” he said, adding that the real question is whether the facility can accommodate and absorb the generation.
The starting point for any project is a detailed study of electricity bills, contracted demand, tariff structure, and slot-wise consumption. Daytime consumption between 10 AM and 2 PM plays a critical role in sizing rooftop systems to maximize self-consumption and minimize exports.
In continuous-load industries, rooftop solar systems typically achieve payback periods of 3 to 5 years. With accelerated depreciation benefits, this can drop to under two years. However, optimal sizing remains crucial; over-sizing can affect returns, while under-sizing reduces savings potential.
Seasonal industries may face additional complexity, especially where the load varies significantly during certain months. In such cases, storage or other optimization strategies may be required.
Rooftop and Open Access
While rooftop solar is often the first step, open access provides additional coverage once on-site capacity is exhausted. Businesses may pursue short, medium, or long-term open-access arrangements to expand renewable sourcing beyond their premises.
Rahul Kodali, Managing Director at <a href="https://vyomaa.com/usa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vyomaa Energy</a>, explained that renewable procurement is often sequential. “Companies typically begin with rooftop solar and then move to open access once on-site capacity is exhausted.”
He noted that rooftop installations can provide 20% to 30% savings with minimal transmission losses, while open access, which often covers 40% to 50% of consumption in some cases, adds scale.
Industry guidance suggests that 60% to 70% renewable coverage is an optimal balance; pushing beyond that can significantly increase costs for marginal gains.
Transmission and distribution losses in open access systems, absent in rooftop installations, are an important consideration. Rooftop solar systems also provide greater tariff predictability through long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs), shielding businesses from rising grid tariffs and enhancing strategic cost clarity.
Kodali emphasized that price alone should not drive decisions. Solar projects must be executed, commissioned, and maintained properly to deliver expected savings. Operational clarity, performance monitoring, and long-term maintenance planning are critical components that often get overlooked.
Pricing Variables and Hidden Costs
The cost of a rooftop solar system ranges between ₹28 million (~$315,840)/MW and ₹32 million (~$360,960)/MW, depending on site conditions. However, cost variations between vendors often stem from differences in design assumptions, cable routing, safety provisions, rooftop orientation, shadow analysis, and the distance to electrical rooms.
Garimella pointed out that if the scope is identical, vendor prices should not differ significantly. Differences usually stem from capacity estimations and design interpretations rather than pure material cost variation.
He cautioned businesses against focusing solely on payback. “The more important metric is the lifetime cost of energy,” he noted, stressing that performance beyond the initial five years determines the real value of a project.
Financing Models
For companies concerned about capital expenditure, three primary models exist: full CAPEX, bank financing, and developer-owned OPEX structures.
Candi Solar has also introduced a hybrid “performance-linked loan” model. Under this structure, the asset remains on the customer’s books, enabling accelerated depreciation and GST input credit benefits, while the developer assumes execution and performance risk.
This structure blends the advantages of CAPEX and OPEX models while shifting operational risk to the developer.
Technical Considerations
Inverter selection depends on project scale. For installations below 10 MW, string inverters are generally preferred due to design flexibility and efficiency advantages. Central inverters are increasingly deployed in large utility-scale projects.
Connection at high tension (HT) or low tension (LT) levels does not inherently affect efficiency if systems are properly designed; loss management depends more on cable sizing and layout.
Power factor penalties can arise after solar integration, particularly in smaller installations. Maintaining power factor close to unity is critical. Adding capacitor banks can mitigate penalties and stabilize system performance.
Battery Storage
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are gaining attention, but adoption in the C&amp;I segment remains at an early stage.
Kodali highlighted that batteries involve inherent round-trip losses. “If you put 100 units into a battery, you may get only 74 to 76 units out after accounting for charging and discharging losses,” he explained.
Garimella drew parallels with the early solar market, suggesting that scale will also drive cost reductions in storage. Rising grid tariffs and policy evolution may improve battery viability over the next three to four years.
While battery prices are declining and scale is improving, pure arbitrage models may not yet justify widespread adoption. Storage paired with solar or wind improves viability, especially for hospitals, universities, and other critical facilities that require reliability.
Renewable Energy as Competitive Strategy
Beyond savings, renewable adoption increasingly shapes global competitiveness. International buyers and retailers already assess suppliers based on their renewable adoption and carbon-reduction performance.
Renewable adoption enhances ESG alignment and strengthens supplier positioning in international markets.
Solar is no longer merely a green initiative or a cost-saving tool. It is becoming a strategic infrastructure decision that affects energy predictability, operational focus, and long-term competitiveness.
The discussions at Mercom India’s <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/event/c-and-i-clean-energy-meet-2026-coimbatore" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Coimbatore C&amp;I Clean Energy Meet</a> emphasized that Tamil Nadu’s industries must look beyond short-term payback and evaluate renewable investments through a lifecycle and strategic lens. In a state with high renewable energy penetration, the next phase of growth will be defined not by whether companies adopt solar, but by how intelligently and sustainably they do so.

					</table>Maharashtra is steadily cementing its position as one of India’s important markets for green energy procurement through the open access route. The state ranks second in installed open-access solar capacity, accounting for over 17% of the country’s installations as of September 2025.
Although quarterly installations dipped during the July to September period due to regulatory uncertainty, the cumulative picture remains strong, backed by a robust pipeline of solar, wind, hybrid, and storage-linked projects.
Demand Drivers
Two distinct motivations are driving the demand for open access in Maharashtra. A majority of companies are turning to renewables to cut electricity costs and improve cash flows, while a smaller but significant segment is compelled by regulatory mandates and international supply-chain requirements to go green.
“About 80% of companies want to go green to stay competitive and fix their electricity costs for the next 25 years,” said Rahul Makahaniya, Chief Marketing Officer at <a href="https://www.soleosenergy.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Soleos Energy</a>. The remaining 15% to 20% are largely responding to Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPOs) and ESG expectations from global clients.
Sector-wise, demand spans textiles, plastics, education institutions, and manufacturing, but data centers, particularly in Mumbai, are emerging as a key growth driver. Their need for reliable, uninterrupted power is pushing adoption beyond conventional solar into more sophisticated renewable energy configurations.
Policy Stability
After a phase of uncertainty that slowed installations in mid-2025, policy clarity has helped restore momentum. The continuation of 100% energy banking (excluding peak hours) has been especially crucial in reviving stalled inquiries and encouraging new commitments.
The real impact of policy is on the quantity of energy that a company can source from green power. For instance, a company consuming 100 units of electricity may, under restrictive policies, be able to source only 30% to 32% of its consumption from renewable energy.
In this scenario, savings are realized only for the 30 units, while the remaining 70 units remain subject to conventional tariffs. Conversely, under a favorable policy framework, the same company could green as many as 70 units, effectively doubling the potential savings.
Understanding the Procurement Pathway
For businesses, procuring power through open access is no longer a complicated exercise. Consumers can opt for CAPEX models, investing fully in solar parks and benefiting from accelerated depreciation and savings up to ₹7 (~$0.08)/kWh, or choose OPEX and hybrid models, which offer cheaper power without upfront investment.
Pramod Maladkar, Senior General Manager at <a href="https://enrichenergy.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Enrich Energy</a>, stated, “The process begins with a detailed analysis of the monthly electricity bill.” Factors such as contract demand, consumption patterns, and load profiles determine the appropriate sizing of projects.
Once these fundamentals are clear, execution tends to be smooth, especially when handled by developers offering end-to-end solutions.
Storage Still a Selective Play
According to Makahaniya, Maharashtra is yet to witness significant adoption of batteries by industrial units. Capital costs for battery storage remain high, given that the base price for energy discharged from the battery is approximately ₹2 (~$0.024)/kWh to ₹2.5 (~$0.030)/kWh. For industries sourcing grid power at ₹8 (~$0.10)/kWh to ₹9 (~$0.11)/kWh or generating solar power at ₹4 (~$0.048)/kWh, integrating batteries often becomes uneconomical unless grid tariffs exceed ₹10 (~$0.12)/kWh to ₹12 (~$0.14)/kWh.
He also remarked that high capital costs, currently in the range of ₹9 million (~$108,400)/MWh to ₹12 million (~$144,600)/MWh, limit its viability to consumers with high tariffs and round-the-clock demand, such as hotels, commercial buildings, and data centers.
For these users, storage-backed renewable power can deliver round-the-clock green energy at ₹5.5 (~$0.066)/kWh to ₹5.7 (~$0.069)/kWh, while locking in tariffs for up to 25 years. “Green data centers are the future,” Makahaniya noted, pointing to rising ESG compliance pressures from international investors.
However, concerns persist about long-duration outages and battery charging constraints, which is why most industries continue to retain diesel generators as backup power.
Cost reductions are expected to change the equation. With sodium-ion technology, battery prices could fall to ₹5.5 million (~$66,300)/MWh to ₹6 million (~$72,300)/MWh, making storage viable for a wider industrial base.
On the other hand, commercial segments are increasingly finding batteries viable at tariffs in the ₹16 (~$0.19)/kWh to ₹17 (~$0.20)/kWh range, and hotels and commercial complexes are beginning to explore storage solutions.
Data centers represent another rapidly growing segment, where the demand for round-the-clock power and a 100% green energy supply, through a mix of solar, wind, and batteries, is driving project closures, particularly in Mumbai.
These developments suggest that while industrial uptake remains moderate, commercial and high-demand sectors are emerging as key drivers for renewable energy storage deployment.
Power Purchase Agreement
Given the long-term nature of open access contracts, speakers stressed the importance of carefully structured PPAs. Consumers must assess the credibility of developers, tariff mechanisms, generation guarantees, lock-in periods, exit clauses, and penalties.
The choice between third-party, captive, and group captive models depends largely on investment appetite and risk tolerance.
