AusEnergy Services (ASL) has awarded six long-duration battery storage projects totaling 1,334 MW/5,336 MWh under the first Firm Energy Reliability Mechanism auction in South Australia.
Neoen Australia won two projects of 200 MW/800 MWh each, and Ampyr Energy and Iberdrola won 270 MW/1,080 MWh each.
Akaysha Energy won a capacity of 250 MW/1,000 MWh, and ZEBRE won 144 MW/576 MWh.
Firm Energy Reliability Mechanism Agreements are long-term contracts designed by the South Australian Government to support investment in long-duration firm capacity. The contracted projects must deliver firm and dispatchable electricity during periods of system stress.
The projects must be designed to deliver a cumulative committed output of 517 MW/4,136 MWh and be capable of continuous dispatch for at least 8 hours during periods of tight supply-demand balance.
The tender was designed to procure long-duration capacity across multiple delivery timelines. The awarded projects are expected to deliver 375 MW/3,000 MWh of committed output capacity by November 2028. A further 142 MW/1,136 MWh are expected by November 2029.
The Firm Energy Reliability Mechanism supports South Australia’s electricity system as the state moves toward its target of net 100% renewable electricity by 2027. ASL said renewable generation now supplies more than 70% of the state’s electricity.
Nevenka Codevelle, Chief Executive Officer at ASL, said that renewable generation supplies more than 70% of South Australia’s electricity, and these awarded projects are expected to add additional reliable, long-duration dispatchable capacity.
In February 2026, ASL awarded six new long-duration energy storage battery projects totaling 1.17 GW/11.98 GWh under the sixth round of the New South Wales Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap. Each project will have a storage capacity equivalent to at least 8 hours. Collectively, the awarded projects have a combined capacity of 1,170 MW.
Recently, Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water awarded 19 renewable energy projects under Tender 7 of the Capacity Investment program, with a combined capacity of 7.8 GW, exceeding the tendered 5 GW cap.
