In an interview on the sidelines of the Mercom India Renewables Summit 2026 held in New Delhi on July 1 and 2, Prashant Mathur, CEO at Saatvik Green Energy, said there is a clear mismatch in India’s solar supply chain, with only 30 GW of cell manufacturing capacity compared to nearly 200 GW of module manufacturing capacity. While the module capacity of 200 GW exceeds the current annual market demand of 50 to 60 GW, the actual output is around 70 to 80 GW due to a 40% capacity utilization rate. To address the cell shortage, module manufacturers have a 1- to 1.5-year window to backward-integrate into cell manufacturing.
