RMC Switchgears has announced plans to develop a solar module manufacturing project with an annual production capacity of 1 GW in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The project includes an estimated capital expenditure of ₹1 billion (~$12.5 million).

The new facility will be adjacent to the company’s current operational project to ensure efficient integration with existing operations. Both projects are expected to become operational by July 2025, with commercial revenues anticipated to begin by August 2025.

The company has announced it will use TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) technology for this project. The facility will be capable of producing both N-type and P-type modules with the flexibility to upgrade to HJT technology in the future.

RMC Switchgears’ subsidiary, RMC Green Energy, will execute this project.

The company aims to use the solar modules and mounting structures for its solar engineering, procurement, and construction, and independent power producer projects to enhance cost efficiency and improve supply chain reliability.

India added 11.3 GW of solar modules and 2 GW of cell manufacturing capacity in the first half of 2024, according to Mercom India’s recently released research report, State of Solar PV Manufacturing in India 1H 2024. As of June 2024, India’s cumulative solar module manufacturing capacity reached 77.2 GW, while solar cell capacity totaled 7.6 GW.

In 2023, India added  20.8 GW of solar modules and 3.2 GW of solar cell capacity, bringing the country’s total solar module capacity to 64.5 GW.

According to Mercom India Research, manufacturing capacity additions in 2023 were primarily driven by the domestic demand, anticipated reimposition of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) order starting in April 2024, and potential export opportunities. The report forecasted module manufacturing capacity to exceed 150 GW and cell capacity to reach over 75 GW by 2026.

The cumulative module manufacturing capacity under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers issued by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) stands at 62,765 MW.

The MNRE recently introduced List-II for solar PV cells under ALMM. The mandate will be effective from June 1, 2026. The inclusion of solar cells in ALMM addresses the growing domestic production capacity.
