India generated over 38.3 billion units (BU) of solar power in the third quarter (Q3) of 2025, representing a 20.4% year-over-year (YoY) increase. Solar generation decreased by 11% quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) from 43 BU.

Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat led the solar power generation during the quarter. Rajasthan topped the list with 14.3 BU, from 15.9 BU in Q2 2025. Tamil Nadu was second at 4.9 BU, increasing from 4.7 BU in the previous quarter. Gujarat ranked third with 4.8 BU compared to 5.9 BU in Q2 2025.

Solar generation in Rajasthan and Gujarat dropped by 9.7% and 18.5% QoQ, respectively, due to prolonged monsoons. In Tamil Nadu, however, solar generation increased by 4.7% QoQ.

India: Solar Electricity Generation by Quarter (MU)The northern region generated the highest solar power during the quarter, with more than 16 BU, accounting for 42.9%. The southern and western regions followed with 12.6 BU and 8.7 BU, accounting for 33% and 22.9%, respectively. The eastern and northeastern regions contributed 0.9% and 0.2%, respectively, to quarterly solar generation.

According to Mercom India’s Q2 2025 India Solar Market Update report, India installed 18 GW of solar capacity in the first half (1H) of 2025, marking a 31% year-over-year increase. In the second quarter (Q2) alone, additions reached 11.3 GW, up 145.4% YoY from 4.6 GW and 66.9% higher than Q1, bringing the country’s cumulative installed solar capacity to 116.4 GW as of June 2025.

The total renewable energy generation in Q3, including large hydropower (67.5 BU), was 154.3 BU.

India has set a target of 1,800 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2047 to meet its growing power demand, said Sudeep Jain, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, during the Mercom India Renewables Summit 2025. He noted that the country achieved its 2030 goal of 50% non-fossil fuel-based capacity five years early and is currently generating 243 GW from non-fossil sources.
