Quality assurance services provider Intertek Group has acquired the assets of Japan-based chemicals company Mitsui Chemicals India’s solar photovoltaic testing laboratory in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The solar PV lab provides comprehensive International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 17025-accredited testing services for solar installations, materials, and components.

It will also offer the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the IEC system of conformity assessment programs for electrotechnical equipment and components, and certification bodies’  accreditations.

The lab will drive support for solar module manufacturers by raising efficiencies through harmonized testing and enabling faster global market access.

Intertek’s new business vertical will complement its risk-based quality assurance offering for the solar industry.

André Lacroix, Chief Executive Officer at Intertek, said that India is a highly attractive market for its industry-leading assurance, testing, inspection, and certification solutions.

Intertek has a network of more than 1,000 laboratories and offices in more than 100 countries, and delivers innovative and bespoke assurance, testing, inspection, and certification solutions for its customers’ operations and supply chains.

In February 2026, Intertek Group announced the acquisition of Aerial PV Inspection, a provider of TEK-powered inspection and diagnostic solutions for solar PV systems.

In 2025, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy issued revised guidelines for the series approval of solar modules, detailing how manufacturers and test laboratories must conduct performance and safety testing for compulsory BIS registration under the ‘Solar Systems, Devices and Components Goods Order, 2025.’

According to Mercom India’s State of Solar PV Manufacturing in India 2026 report, India added nearly 119 GW of solar module and over 9 GW of solar cell capacity in 2025.

According to Mercom India’s Q4 and Annual 2025 India Solar Market Update Report, India recorded its highest-ever annual solar capacity addition in the calendar year 2025, installing 36.6 GW, a 43% increase over the 25.6 GW added in 2024.

According to Kiwa PI Berlin’s The 2025 PV Module Manufacturing Quality Report, India, Laos, and the U.S. are among the countries with the highest solar module defect rates, exceeding 8%, due to the rapid expansion of manufacturing capacity, which likely introduced challenges related to quality control, operational stability, and workforce training.
