India added 6.3 GW of wind power capacity in 2025, an 85.2% YoY increase from 3.4 GW in 2024, according to Mercom India Research. The additions marked the highest annual wind installations recorded in the country.

India’s wind power market improved in 2025, supported by higher tender activity, stronger bidder participation, and more competitive tariffs. While land acquisition and grid connectivity remain challenges, developers are addressing these issues, helping keep projects on track for commissioning. A stable tender pipeline and clearer policy visibility have supported investor confidence, and the domestic wind manufacturing ecosystem has enabled compliance with the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) requirements. Wind energy is seeing growing demand due to its role in hybrid power projects and installations aimed at round-the-clock and peak power supply.

During the year, Gujarat topped capacity additions with 2.3 GW, followed by Karnataka (1.68 GW) and Madhya Pradesh (703 MW).

In 2025, JSW Energy commissioned more than 1.2 GW of wind power projects across India, including Solar Energy Corporation of India‘s (SECI) 2,500 MW ISTS-connected blended wind power project (Tranche IX). Adani Green Energy operationalized over 600 MW of wind power projects in Khavda, Gujarat. ReNew also commissioned more than 260 MW of wind projects across India, which were tendered by SECI.

India - Wind Power Installations by Year (MW)

In the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2025, India installed 1.38 GW of wind energy capacity, a 73% YoY growth from 800 MW in Q4 2024. Capacity additions were down 4% in a quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) comparison.

During the quarter, Gujarat led wind capacity additions with 447 MW, closely followed by Karnataka with 362.1 MW. Of the remaining 577.9 MW, Maharashtra contributed 267.7 MW, Tamil Nadu (189.8 MW), Madhya Pradesh (100 MW), and Rajasthan (20.4 MW).

In Q4 2025, Sprng Energy commissioned 165 MW of wind capacity in Madhya Pradesh. JSW Energy installed over 100 MW, and Adani Green Energy and ACME Solar each commissioned 56 MW of wind capacity in Gujarat.

As of December 2025, the cumulative installed wind capacity stood at 54.5 GW.

India - Wind Power Installations by States (%)

Gujarat was the leading state for cumulative wind energy installations with 14.8 GW. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka followed with 12 GW and 8.4 GW, respectively. Maharashtra and Rajasthan rounded off the top five with 5.8 GW and 5.2 GW of cumulative installed wind capacity.

Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh also had significant cumulative wind installations, with 4.3 GW and 3.5 GW, respectively.

The top five states accounted for 85% of the cumulative installed wind capacity as of December 2025.

Recently, MNRE amended the standard operating procedure (SOP) for prototype testing under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers for Wind and wind turbine components, while the SOPs were issued in October.
