Gujarat Industries Power Company (GIPCL) has commissioned a capacity of 105 MW of its 600 MW solar power project at Khavda, Gujarat.

With this commissioning, the project’s total operational capacity now stands at 210 MW. The project is located within the 2,375 MW Renewable Energy Park at Khavda.

It had commissioned 105 MW of capacity in June this year.

Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam had invited bids for the 600 MW solar power project in September 2022. The tender had a greenshoe option for an additional 600 MW.

NHPC, SJVN Green Energy, and NTPC Renewable Energy emerged as winners in this auction.

GIPCL had won the 600 MW capacity under the greenshoe option, quoting ₹2.73 (~$0.031)/kWh, matching the lowest tariff discovered in the original auction. Following this, GIPCL issued a tender for the engineering, procurement and construction of the project in May 2023. Sterling and Wilson received the letter of intent from GIPCL for the project in August 2023.

GIPCL is developing the 2,375 MW Khavda Renewable Energy Park. The park comprises solar projects of 1,100 MW, which are under construction. It has a 25-year power purchase agreement with GUVNL for these projects.

Additionally, a 75 MW group captive solar project is being developed on reclaimed land at the Vastan Mine, with plans to scale up solar capacity to 500 MW in a phased manner.

GIPCL currently has 547 MW solar generating capacity spread across various locations in Gujarat, and 112.4 MW wind generating capacity spread across five projects in the state’s Saurashtra and Kutch regions. It has also set up several rooftop solar projects at its thermal plants to reduce auxiliary power consumption.

The company has a total installed power capacity of 1469.4 MW.

Last August, GIPCL invited bids for the supply of modules for a 500 MW solar project at the Great Rann of Kutch.
