Germany installed 3.8 GW of solar capacity in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025, an 11.62% year-over-year (YoY) drop from 4.3 GW, according to data from the Federal Network Agency, Bundesnetzagentur.
Mercom reported that Germany installed 3.7 GW of solar power in Q1 2024, but the Federal Network Agency later revised this figure to 4.3 GW.
The drop in installations could be due to the Solarspitzengesetz law that came into force in February. The law has removed subsidies for solar projects when the electricity price is negative in the spot market.
The country’s cumulative solar capacity reached 103.8 GW with the recent addition.
Germany added 1,335 MW of solar capacity in January, 1,665 MW in February, and 787 MW in March. The country recorded the lowest monthly installations in March this year.
It added 96.1 MW of balcony, 1,947.4 MW of rooftop and façade, and 1,658.6 MW of ground-mounted solar projects during the quarter.
A majority of rooftop and façade installations were in Bavaria (388.8 MW), followed by North Rhine-Westphalia (363.8 MW) and Baden-Württemberg (321.2 MW).
In March, Bundesnetzagentur awarded about 317 MW of rooftop solar capacity against 143 bids received in the auction. The lowest awarded bid was at a tariff of €0.079 (~$0.085)/kWh and the highest successful bid was €0.0969 (~$0.10)/kWh. The weighted average tariff was €0.0910 (~$0.098)/kWh.
Germany aims to install 215 GW of solar capacity by 2030, with 22 GW of capacity additions yearly.
Germany added 16,179 MW of new solar capacity in 2024, a 7% YoY growth. The installations in 2024 were the highest in a year recorded in Germany. Bavaria added 3,943 MW of solar capacity, the highest in the country. North Rhine-Westphalia followed with 2,130 MW, Baden-Wuerttemberg with 2,126 MW, Lower Saxony with 1,571 MW, and Brandenburg with 1,320 MW.
In Q4 2024, the country added 4.2 GW of solar capacity. The installations for October totaled 1,649 MW, November (1,084 MW), and December (1,439 MW).
