EVs Account for Over 10% of Vehicle Sales in Q2 2026

Electric vehicle (EV) sales in India reached 837,453 units in the second quarter (Q2) of 2026, a year-over-year (YoY) increase of 52.3% over 549,900 units recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2025.

According to the data released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways through its Vahan Dashboard, EVs accounted for 10.6% of overall automobile sales, which totaled 7,896,871 units during Q2 2026.

India now has over 9.19 million registered EVs.

Electric two-wheelers

Electric two-wheelers accounted for nearly 63% (524,910 units) of total EV sales in Q2 2026. TVS Motor Company retained its lead in the segment with 130,662 units sold, followed by Bajaj Auto (117,581), Ather Energy (88,465), Hero Motocorp (57,062), and Ola Electric (43,846).

Electric three-wheelers

Electric three-wheelers constituted 25.8% (216,340 units) of all EVs sold during the quarter. Mahindra Last Mile Mobility emerged as the segment leader after selling 34,417 units during the period, narrowly ahead of Bajaj Auto  (34,182). TVS Motor Company ranked third with 11,108 units, followed by YC Electric Vehicle (6,560) and Dilli Electric Auto (4,603).

Electric four-wheelers

Electric four-wheelers accounted for 10.1% of total EV sales in the country, with 84,952 units sold during the quarter.  Tata Passenger Electric Mobility led the segment with 32,110 units, followed by  Mahindra Electric Automobile (19,287) and JSW MG Motor (16,591). Maruti Suzuki ranked fourth with 4,977 units, while VinFast Auto completed the top five with 3,001 units.

Electric buses

The quarter saw the sale of 1,438 electric buses.  PMI Electro Mobility Solutions led the segment with 334 units sold, followed by JBM Auto (325), Switch Mobility Automotive (294),  Olectra Greentech (236), and Pinnacle Mobility Solutions (110).

EV sales in India reached 696,769 units in Q1 2026, an increase of over 35.5% YoY against the 514,198 units.

The Parliament’s Standing Committee on Industry raised concerns about the dominance of the automobile and EV ecosystem in the MHI budget, which is around ₹75.37 billion (~$802.49 million), accounting for about 94.9% of total MHI demand. The Committee warned that these enhanced outlays must be backed by realistic implementation pipelines and constant monitoring to avoid under-utilization and cuts at the revised estimates stage.
