Electric Vehicle Sales Clock 3% YoY Growth in Q1 2025

Electric vehicle (EV) sales in India reached 514,198 units in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025, an increase of over 3% year-over-year (YoY) against the 499,930 units sold in the same period of 2024.

EVs account for 8% of overall automobile sales, which totaled 6,371,476 units in Q1 2025, according to data released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways through its Vahan Dashboard.

India now has over 5.91 million registered EVs.

Electric two-wheelers

Electric two-wheelers comprised nearly 59% (305,217) of the total EVs sold during the quarter.

Bajaj Auto led the segment with the highest sales of 77,860 units, followed by TVS with 73,384 units. Ola (56,465), Ather (40,476), and Hero Motocorp (14,132) were the other companies registering significant sales.

Electric three-wheelers

Electric three-wheelers constituted 34% (172,633) of all EVs sold in Q1.

Mahindra Last Mile Mobility led this category, achieving the highest sales with 18,638, followed by Bajaj Auto (15,236),  YC Electric (10,705),  Saera Electric Auto (6,577), and Dilli Electric Auto (5,367).

Electric four-wheelers

Electric four-wheelers represented 6% of the total sales at 31,136 units.

Tata Motors remained the most preferred electric four-wheeler automobile maker, with 12,582 units sold. MG Motor  (11,499),  Mahindra & Mahindra (2,834), Hyundai (1,935), and BYD India (924) were the other top performers.

EV sales in India reached a record 1.95 million units in 2024, an over 27% YoY growth against the 1.53 million units sold the previous year.

The Ministry of Heavy Industries recently mandated a 100% domestic content requirement for 18 EV components under the two-wheeler, three-wheeler, and e-buses segments to avail of subsidy under the PM E-Drive program. The PM E-Drive was launched with an outlay of ₹109 billion (~$1.29 billion), focusing on providing demand incentives, deploying EVs, and developing charging infrastructure to support wider EV adoption.

The program allocates ₹36.79 billion ($438.1 million) in subsidies to promote electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, e-ambulances, e-trucks, and e-buses. Specifically, it aims to support the deployment of 2.479 million electric two-wheelers, 316,000 three-wheelers, and 14,028 e-buses.
