Global e-commerce company Amazon will procure a cumulative 379 MW of clean energy from three wind farms in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.

The company will procure power from CleanMax’s 100 MW wind project in Koppal, Karnataka, BluPine’s 99 MW wind project at Solapur in Maharashtra, and JSW Energy’s 180 MW wind project at Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu.

Amazon signed power purchase agreements with the three companies

With these projects, Amazon will have 53 solar and wind power projects, capable of generating more than 4 MWh of energy annually.

Besides nine utility-scale solar and wind farms across the country, Amazon’s renewable energy portfolio in India also includes onsite solar arrays on 44 local buildings that host Amazon operations.

Avinash Shekhar, Head of APJC Energy and Water Strategy, Amazon Web Services, said  the company has invested in more than 600 solar and wind projects globally, including over 50 in India.

The renewable energy procured will power Amazon’s offices and meet the goals of powering its operations with 100% renewable energy.

These projects are part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

Amazon met its 100% renewable energy goal seven years early in 2023.

Last October, Amazon announced a 198 MW wind project in Osmanabad, Maharashtra, its seventh utility-scale project in India.

Corporations around the world have been increasingly sourcing renewable energy for their operations. In 2023, corporations announced a record 46 GW of solar and wind contracts, a 12% year-over-year increase from 41 GW in 2022, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s Corporate Energy Market outlook for the first half of fiscal year 2024.

In 2022, Amazon announced the development of a set of utility-scale renewable energy projects with a cumulative capacity of 420 MW in India. These included a 210 MW solar power project by ReNew Power, a 100 MW solar power project by Amp Energy India, and a 110 MW solar power project by Brookfield Renewables.
