AM Green Ammonia BV, incorporated by Greenko Group, has arrived at its Final Investment Decision (FID) for its first one million-ton green ammonia project in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
This project will be based at an existing urea plant in Kakinada. The facility will be converted into a green ammonia production unit, with operations starting in the second half of 2026.
The company has secured 1,300 MW of carbon-free power through 4,500 MW of wind-solar hybrid capacity and 950 MW of pumped storage capacity.
A 25-year power purchase agreement with NTPC covers half of the required power capacity. Gentari, Petronas’ renewable energy arm based in Malaysia, is expected to provide the remaining capacity.
The company aims at achieving a production capacity of 5 million tons per year (MTPA) of green ammonia by 2030.
“The FID status achieved by our Kakinada plant underscores our commitment to providing carbon-free energy solutions globally while meeting the highest standards, such as EU RFNBO norms,” says Anil Chalamalasetty, Founder of Greenko Group and AM Green.
In addition to the Kakinada project, the company is also focused on producing green ammonia across multiple locations in India to achieve its planned 5 MTPA of green ammonia capacity by 2030.
In May, Norway-based Yara Clean Ammonia signed a term sheet with Greenko ZeroC, AM Green’s green ammonia production arm, for the long-term supply of up to 50% of renewable ammonia from the Kakinada production facility.
Last October, Gentari entered into an agreement with AM Green to produce 5 MTPA of green ammonia using renewable energy sources.
Greenko ZeroC was among the winners of Solar Energy Corporation of India’s tender to set up 450,000 MTPA production facilities for green hydrogen. The company was allotted a capacity of 90,000 MTPA.
