Waaree Clean Energy Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of solar module manufacturer Waaree Energies, has signed an electrolyzer-as-a-service agreement with green hydrogen solutions company Zero Footprint Industries (ZFI) for a 2.5 MW alkaline electrolyzer to support ZFI’s planned capacity addition in Uttar Pradesh.
Under the terms of the agreement, Waaree Clean Energy Solutions will design, install, commission, and operate the 2.5 MW alkaline electrolyzer system. The electrolyzer will be manufactured at Waaree’s Dungri plant in Gujarat. It will supply green hydrogen and oxygen to ZFI under a 15-year contract.
The electrolyzer project aims to produce approximately 4.1 million normal cubic meters (NM3) of green hydrogen and roughly 2 million Nm3 of green oxygen annually. These gases will primarily be used by ZFI’s existing customers in the mentha oil, chemical, steel, and pharmaceutical industries to help them save on operational expenses and transition from grey to green hydrogen.
The project is expected to have a capacity of 500 m3/hr with an expansion potential of 10,000 m3/hr across multiple locations over the next five years.
The project is estimated to take seven months to complete. The electrolyzer stack is expected to be delivered by the second quarter of the financial year 2027, and commercial operation is projected to commence in the third quarter.
The companies also entered into a strategic memorandum of understanding to supply 50 MW of electrolyzers through the electrolyzer-as-a-service route for ZFI’s decentralized small green hydrogen projects across Northern India.
Last March, Waaree Clean Energy Solutions was among the winners of the Solar Energy Corporation of India’s auction to set up production facilities for green hydrogen in India under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition Program (Mode-1-Tranche-II). Waaree secured a capacity of 90,000 MW for an allocated incentive of ₹5.1 billion (~$59 million).
Last year, Waaree Energies approved an additional capital expenditure of ₹1.25 billion (~$14.09 million) in Waaree Clean Energy Solutions to increase the annual production capacity of its electrolyzer manufacturing plant from 300 MW to 1,000 MW.
In December 2024, Waaree Energies approved the establishment of a 300 MW electrolyzer and a 3.5 GWh lithium-ion Advanced Chemistry Storage Cell manufacturing plant.
