Waaree Group has announced that it has secured a 10 MWh order for battery energy storage systems (BESS) from an infrastructure development company for deployment in Tamil Nadu.
The company is scaling domestic battery storage manufacturing with a 4 GWh lithium-ion cell production line and a 5 GWh pack-and-container facility, aimed at supporting both utility-scale and commercial and industrial requirements. These facilities are designed to enable fully indigenous systems, reducing reliance on imports.
Tamil Nadu currently has over 20 GW of installed wind and solar capacity and is actively expanding BESS deployment to enhance grid stability. The state has recently issued a 1.5 GWh standalone BESS tender, indicating rising demand for storage as variable renewable generation increases.
Waaree’s transition strategy includes investments of ₹20.73 billion (~$233.67 million) toward a large-scale battery storage facility in Gujarat and over ₹6.5 billion (~$73.28 million) in renewable power infrastructure. It is additionally developing a 3.5 GWh battery energy storage system facility to support future capacity rollouts.
The company noted recent storage project achievements, including the commissioning of Lakshadweep’s first on-grid solar project in Kavaratti, with a 1.7 MW solar capacity paired with a 1.4 MWh BESS, and a solar-BESS installation in Rajnandgaon, integrating a 40 MW/120 MWh BESS with a 152.33 MW solar project.
Recently, Waaree Energy Storage Systems, the battery energy storage arm of Waaree Energies, raised ₹3.25 billion (~$36.65 million) as part of a ₹10 billion (~$112.78 million) funding round led by investment firm Niveshaay.
In the same month, Waaree Energies received an order to supply 360 MW of modules from an undisclosed customer who develops, owns, and operates utility-scale solar and energy storage projects.
In October this year, Waaree Energies secured separate orders to supply 220 MW, 210 MW, and 140 MW of solar modules from undisclosed customers engaged in owning, developing, and operating renewable power projects in India.
In September, Waaree Energies invested ₹3 billion (~$33.79 million) Waaree Energy Storage Solutions, through a rights issue. The funding will be used to establish a lithium-ion advanced chemistry storage cell manufacturing plant.
