India installed over 1.3 GW of rooftop solar capacity in the first nine months (9M) of the calendar year 2023, an increase of 12% year-over-year, according to Mercom India Research’s newly released Q3 2023 Mercom India Rooftop Solar Market Report.

The cumulative rooftop solar capacity installed at the end of September 2023 was 10.1 GW.

Here is a look at the top five states for cumulative rooftop solar installations as of Q3 2023.

#1 Gujarat was the top market with 26.7% of the total installed rooftop solar capacity. Madhya Gujarat Vij Company’s 1 GW tender has significantly contributed, making up 24.2% of the installations in the state, with over 65% of the tendered capacity already commissioned.

Power distribution companies (DISCOMs) in the state floated rooftop solar tenders totaling 16.7 MW during 9M 2023.

#2 Maharashtra, in the second spot, is home to 13.5% of the rooftop solar installations in the country. The installations are largely driven by the commercial and industrial (C&I) units keen on offsetting high electricity tariffs by leveraging reduction in system costs.

Maharashtra DISCOMs released tenders for 41.1 MW of rooftop solar projects in 9M 2023.

#3 Rajasthan, ranking third, contributed 8.3% to the country’s total rooftop solar installations. The state has added approximately 35.5 MW in the first nine months of 2023.

DISCOMs in the state issued tenders for 60.2 MW of rooftop solar projects during 9M 2023.

#4 Kerala emerged as the fourth-largest state, with 5.5% of the total rooftop solar capacity installed in the country. Notably, installations under the Soura Program (Phase II) make up a significant 25.2% of the total installed capacity in the state.

Targeting the C&I segment, the Kerala State Electricity Board has invited bids to empanel installers to set up 100 MW of grid-connected rooftop and ground-mounted solar projects.

DISCOMs in Kerala floated tenders for 225.6 MW of rooftop solar projects in 9M 2023.
