Solar energy adoption is increasing in India’s commercial and industrial segments. Sectors such as textiles, foundries, automobiles, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, along with other industries with high power consumption and a suitable roof space, are actively opting for solar installations.
Recently, AYM Syntex, a textile manufacturer based in Mumbai, installed a 400 kW rooftop solar system to reduce its reliance on grid electricity and bring down electricity costs without disrupting operations.
The solar installation incorporates net metering and enables 657,000 kW of power generation annually, with projected annual savings of ₹6.5 million (~$75,776).
AYM Syntex has a total power requirement exceeding 3 MW. The 400 kW solar installation meets approximately 15% of this demand.
Neeraj Bharadwaj, Assistant Vice President, Commercials and Projects, AYM Syntex, said, “Other than cost-cutting, the decision to go for the solar system was also to adopt sustainable energy and achieve our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives. We are evaluating installing solar on our other facilities as well.”
Bengaluru-based Solar Hitech Solutions installed the project for the textile firm in 45 days. The firm’s Director, Varun Rajaram, said the company designed a non-penetrative structure to preserve rooftop integrity while maximizing performance.
A specialized adhesive was deployed on aluminum mini-rails, capable of withstanding wind speeds of up to 180 km/hr. “This adhesive-based mounting system eliminated the need for drilling, a key concern for industrial rooftops,” he said.
Rooftop solar installations in India reached 14.9 GW by the end of March. The contribution of the C&I segment in these installations was about 53%. Compared to the previous quarter, installations under the industrial segment grew by 53% in Q1 2025 and by 25% in the commercial segment, according to the rooftop solar report released by Mercom India Research.
To increase awareness among businesses in the C&I segment about clean energy adoption, Mercom India is hosting the fourth edition of ‘C&I Clean Energy Meet’ in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on June 13, 2025. These events aim to provide businesses with the best industry insights and tools they need to adopt renewable energy solutions, lower their power costs, and enhance their sustainability ratings.
