Tata Power has signed 25-year power purchase agreement with Noida International Airport (NIA) to supply solar and wind power from onsite and offsite projects totaling nearly 24 MW.

Yamuna International Airport, a wholly owned subsidiary of Zurich Airport International, has selected Tata Power to meet a substantial portion of NIA’s energy requirements through renewable sources.

Tata Power Trading Company (TPTCL) has signed the power purchase agreement with Yamuna International Airport.

TPTCL will supply 10.8 MW of wind power to NIA, with secured assets from Tata Power Renewable Energy (TPREL) group captive projects. It will also develop, operate, and maintain a 13 MW onsite captive solar project with essential electrical infrastructure and smart energy infrastructure for 25 years.

The project is expected to be completed within six months.

The total investment by TPREL will ₹5.5 billion (~$65 million) for the wind and solar power supply and the infrastructure.

Ministry of Civil Aviation has taken initiatives towards carbon neutrality at airports in India. Airport operators, developers of upcoming greenfield airports and the respective state governments have been advised to prepare a roadmap towards achieving net zero carbon emissions by adopting renewable energy. Since 2014, a total of 73 airports have switched over to 100% green energy usage as of August 2024, according to the Ministry.

Airports Authority of India (AAI) is India’s leading airport operator and sole air navigation service provider. AAI has drafted a plan to switch from fossil fuel-based electricity and ensure 100% renewable energy consumption in all airports. It is committed to enhancing the solar power capacity to 100 MW by December 2024 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

In February 2024, Mumbai-based renewable energy firm CleanMax Enviro Energy Solutions entered into a 25-year-long power purchase agreement with Bangalore International Airport (BIAL) to supply power from a 45.9 MW solar-wind captive power project.
