Tata Power Begins Work on 800 MW Wind-Solar Project in Andhra Pradesh

The ₹57.5 billion project will comprise 400 MW each of solar and wind capacity

Tata Power Renewable Energy (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, has begun construction of an 800 MW wind-solar project in Andhra Pradesh.

The project will comprise 400 MW of solar capacity at Pattikonda in Kurnool district and 400 MW of wind capacity at Kanekallu in Ananthapuram district.

TPREL will invest ₹57.5 billion (~$602.46 million) to develop the project.

Suzlon will execute the 400 MW wind component under an engineering, procurement, and construction contract.

Of the 400 MW solar capacity, 200 MW will be developed as a firm and dispatchable renewable energy project for NTPC. This project will include a 25 MW/50 MWh battery energy storage system. The remaining 200 MW of solar capacity will be available for future allocation.

The wind-solar project has secured 800 MW of interstate transmission system connectivity at the Ananthapuram II and Kurnool-4 substations of the Central Transmission Utility of India.

The project will span 3,460 acres, including 2,700 acres for the solar and 760 acres for the wind component.

TPREL said the project is being implemented under the Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy Policy.

The company has a renewable energy portfolio of 12 GW, including 6.7 GW of operational capacity and 5.3 GW of projects under implementation. Its operational portfolio comprises 5.4 GW of solar and 1.3 GW of wind capacity.

Tata Power’s total generation portfolio stands at 16.3 GW, including 7.5 GW of clean energy capacity. The company aims to achieve 100% clean energy by 2045.

This February, TPREL placed an order with wind turbine manufacturer Senvion India to supply and install 83.7 MW of wind turbines.

Earlier, TPREL commissioned a 198 MW wind energy project under a group captive model in Karur, Tamil Nadu.

Wind energy is seeing growing demand due to its role in hybrid power projects and installations aimed at round-the-clock and peak power supply.
