The Tata Group is planning to set up a 20 GWh battery manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat, through its clean energy subsidiary Agratas.
The group has invested ₹9.51 billion (~$113.2 million) in Agratas.
Agratas is setting up a 40 GWh battery manufacturing plant in the UK.
In its annual report 2023-24, Tata Group said it is creating critical manufacturing capabilities by setting up manufacturing plants in India and the UK.
Agratas’ UK vehicle battery manufacturing facility will be located near Bridgwater in Somerset. Construction on the gigafactory, which covers 224,710 sq.m. of built area, is underway.
Jaguar Land Rover and Tata Motors are the anchor customers for this venture, with supplies scheduled to commence in 2026. Once constructed, the facility is expected to contribute almost half of the country’s projected battery manufacturing capacity.
Tata Group also $78 million in Boston-area startup Alsym Energy to expand the pilot production lines of its first commercial battery product, Alsym Green. The battery is designed for grid-scale energy storage and offers better energy density than other non-flammable chemistries while operating safely at high temperatures.
In February, the Solar Energy Corporation of India commissioned a 40 MW/120 MWh Battery Energy Storage System project associated with a 100 MW solar project in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh. The project’s engineering, procurement, and construction contract was awarded to Tata Power in December 2021.
Earlier, Agratas and Tata Technologies announced a collaboration to scale Agratas’ product development and enterprise systems, supporting the design, development, and manufacturing of battery solutions.
Leveraging Tata Technologies’ expertise in product development, digital engineering, digital manufacturing, and product supply chain, Agratas will accelerate its product development timelines, including integrating battery cells into modules and packs across multiple applications to match customer requirements.
