Wind turbine manufacturer Suzlon Group has secured a 248.85 MW wind turbine generator order from Luxembourg-based steel and mining company ArcelorMittal Group through its Indian renewable energy entity, to decarbonize steel production.

The order is part of a 550 MW hybrid energy project in Gujarat.

Suzlon will supply 79 of its S144 turbines to ArcelorMittal Nippon’s steel facilities, with each rated at 3.15 MW.

The company said this order from ArcelorMittal is its fourth major wind turbine order. Suzlon’s contribution to green steel capacity in India has reached roughly 1,156 MW.

Suzlon has 4.5 GW of installed wind energy capacity in Gujarat.

JP Chalasani, Chief Executive Officer at Suzlon Group, said, “This project reflects Suzlon’s strategic focus on the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) segment, where we aim to gradually increase its share to 50% of our overall order book. We expect EPC to drive an increasing share of our upcoming order wins.”

Suzlon Group has installed over 21 GW of wind energy capacity across 17 countries, with an installed base of 15.4 GW in India and around 6 GW internationally.

ArcelorMittal has been installing renewable energy projects to decarbonize its steel-making processes. In 2023, ArcelorMittal said it had agreed with Siemens Gamesa in India and Casa dos Ventos in Brazil to install wind projects to power its steel factories, reducing carbon emissions in the high-emitting sector.

In December this year, the company announced it will set up three renewable energy projects in India totaling 1 GW of solar and wind capacity. The three projects are expected to cost $900 million.

The Indian government has been promoting the use of renewable energy in hard-to-abate steelmaking. A 2023 meeting organized by the Steel Ministry discussed pathways for the industry’s decarbonization through skill development and incentives. The meeting brought together five of the 13 task forces, all aimed at fostering the green steel ecosystem in India, uniting a consortium of stakeholders, industry experts, and government officials to advance the decarbonization of the steel industry.

In December 2025, Suzlon won two wind turbine supply contracts, totaling 306 MW, from Yanara for firm and dispatchable renewable energy projects in the Barmer district, Rajasthan.
