Surya International to Set Up 1.2 GW Solar Cell and Module Facilities in Bihar
The projects are expected to be completed by February 2026
January 7, 2025
Odisha-based integrated solar power company Surya International has announced it will set up solar cell and module manufacturing plant in Bihar.
Surya International aims to invest ₹10 billion (~$116.59 million) to set up a 1.2 GW solar cell and 1.2 GW module manufacturing plant in Sasaram, Rohtas district using TOPCon technology.
The cell and module facilities are expected to be commissioned by February 2026.
The plant will cater to the increasing demand for clean energy in domestic and international markets.
Surya International plans to convert the plants into an integrated facility in the future.
The company will invest in the plant in phases over three years. It will also set up projects under the renewable energy service company model.
It also announced plans to file a draft red herring prospectus for an initial public offering in the next two years.
Recently, Surya International announced an investment of ₹800 million (~$9.32 million) for a 500 MW solar module manufacturing project in Odisha. The company will also expand the capacity of its existing 100 MW solar module manufacturing project to 500 MW.
In the first half of the calendar year 2024, India added 11.3 GW of solar modules and 2 GW of solar cell capacity, according to Mercom India’s State of Solar PV Manufacturing in India 1H 2024 report. The country’s cumulative solar module manufacturing capacity reached 77.2 GW, and solar cell manufacturing capacity totaled 7.6 GW as of June 2024.
Indian companies have been ramping up solar cell and module capacities in recent months. Recent capacity additions were driven by a robust solar project pipeline of 132.7 GW planned between 2024 and 2026 and the reinstatement of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) order in April 2024.
As of December, the cumulative module manufacturing capacity under ALMM stood at 63,027 MW.
