China-based solar module manufacturer SoleFiori is setting up a 6 GW heterojunction (HJT) solar module manufacturing facility in Saudi Arabia.

The company signed an agreement with its Saudi partners in Beijing recently.

The new manufacturing facility will use SoleFiori’s existing technologies and production processes to focus on research, development, and manufacture of HJT modules.

SoleFiori claimed its HJT technology is recognized for minimal power degradation in high temperatures and high bifaciality, making it an ideal choice for photovoltaic applications in Saudi Arabia and across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

It said the company’s core HJT technology offers a theoretical conversion efficiency of up to 28.9% and a bifaciality rate of up to 95%. It also features a high temperature coefficient, enabling it to generate approximately 12% more power than conventional P-type cells under the same installed capacity and investment conditions.

Several global solar component manufacturers are establishing manufacturing facilities in the MENA region. In May, Japan-based Nippon Energy announced plans to launch a solar module manufacturing facility in Dubai. The facility will produce 1 GW of HJT modules annually. It also acquired a solar panel manufacturing unit in Dubai.

Chinese firm Sunrev Solar commenced construction of an integrated solar energy components industrial complex in Ain Sokhna, Egypt. Backed by a $200 million investment, the first phase of the project will comprise two factories designed to produce 2 GW of solar cells and modules.

A January report by the Middle East Solar Industry Association indicated that solar module manufacturing in the MENA region likely exceeded 3 GW by the end of 2024. Production facilities in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the UAE, Egypt, and Algeria drove this growth.

The report noted that the region’s ongoing efforts to localize solar manufacturing and reduce its dependence on external suppliers are crucial to the long-term success of the MENA region’s renewable energy strategy.
