Shopping Platform Myntra’s Two Warehouses Are Now Solar-Powered
Myntra has four fulfillment centers in the country

India’s leading fashion and lifestyle platform, Myntra, has installed rooftop solar systems at two of its largest fulfillment centers.
The solar panels at the two facilities located in Bhiwandi, near Mumbai, and Bilaspur, near Gurgaon, are spread over 58,000 square feet, generating electricity to meet 35% of the company’s operational demand. Out of the four, these two fulfillment centers cater to the largest chunk of Myntra’s orders every day. The solar systems would help Myntra lower its annual carbon footprint by 1,825 metric tons, equivalent to reducing the emission impact of 400 cars on the road every year.
In a press note, Myntra said that the systems had been installed just ahead of one of its biggest sales, which would see over 50% of the orders being delivered from these centers.
The company added that it would be scaling up its existing energy-saving infrastructure while also setting ambitious milestones on sustainability and setting meaningful benchmarks in the e-commerce industry. Currently, Myntra says it has over 3,800 solar panels installed on the rooftops of the two fulfillment centers. The company also said that it was making steady progress to double the capacity in the next six months.
Amar Nagaram, the CEO of Myntra, said, “This development marks an important milestone in our journey on the path towards sustainability where we look at creating a positive impact on the environment and driving efficiency for the business. We are immensely proud of our efforts in the sustainability space. This is only a prelude to our efforts for being self-sufficient as, in the next leg of this initiative, we are going to increase our capacity for renewable energy generation.”
Several big e-commerce companies are setting a good precedent by such measures to reduce their carbon footprint.
Another leading online shopping platform Amazon has just announced 26 new utility-scale wind and solar energy projects totaling 3.4 GW of electricity production capacity, bringing its total investment in renewable energy in 2020 to 35 projects and more than 4 GW of capacity. Amazon claims these new projects will make Amazon the largest-ever corporate purchaser of renewable energy along with the largest corporate investment in renewable energy in a single year.
Meanwhile, Flipkart has joined the Climate Group’s electric mobility initiative EV100 with a commitment to support the broader adoption of electric vehicles into its entire fleet across its e-commerce value chain by 2030. The company said that this would be done by placing requirements in service contracts, installing charging infrastructure close to its 1,400 supply chain premises, and incentivizing its delivery executive to use EVs. The e-commerce firm stated that it is also committed to reducing single-use plastic packaging consumption in its supply chain.
