India’s solar manufacturing sector is entering a critical phase as the country seeks to strengthen domestic supply chains, reduce import dependence, and support its rapidly expanding solar deployment targets.
India added nearly 119 GW of solar modules and over 9 GW of solar cell capacity in 2025, according to Mercom India’s State of Solar PV Manufacturing in India 2026 report. The cumulative module manufacturing capacity under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) is 193 GW, while the enlisted cell capacity is 30 GW.
While policy interventions such as the production-linked incentive programs and the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) have boosted investments in manufacturing, factors such as lack of cost competitiveness, technology advancement, raw material availability, and workforce development are still holding the sector back.
At its sixth Renewables Summit, Mercom India will bring together some of the brightest minds in the industry to delve into the challenges facing solar cell manufacturing in the country.
A high-level panel discussion on “Building a Globally Competitive Solar Cell Manufacturing Ecosystem” will be held at 12:30 PM on July 1, 2026, at the Hyatt Regency, New Delhi, as part of the Summit. The session will be held at Oval Hall, Lower Ground Floor.
The panelists are Harsh Vardhan Govil, Chief Operating Officer, Solar Manufacturing at SAEL; Prashant Mathur, Chief Executive Officer at Saatvik Green Energy; and Suhas Donthi, President and Chief Executive Officer at Emmvee Group.
The discussion will examine whether India’s solar cell manufacturing capacity is expanding fast enough to support the country’s clean energy ambitions and explore the policy, technology, financing, and supply chain challenges that could shape the sector’s growth trajectory.
The panelists will share their perspectives on building a globally competitive solar cell manufacturing ecosystem that delivers scale, innovation, quality, and cost competitiveness while strengthening India’s position in the global solar supply chain.
The Summit will also feature other impactful panel discussions on policy shifts across key segments, including solar, wind, energy storage, green hydrogen, transmission, and clean energy manufacturing.
For the first time, the Summit will feature focused discussions and workshops addressing practical challenges across manufacturing, workforce development, and project procurement.
In addition to the conference program, the 2026 Summit will host the sixth Mercom India Awards and the Renewable Energy Exhibition.
The Mercom India Awards, recognized as one of the solar industry’s most prestigious accolades, will honor outstanding achievements and spotlight companies and individuals driving the sector’s growth. The awards will be presented by Pralhad Venkatesh Joshi, Minister of New and Renewable Energy and Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
The Renewable Energy Exhibition will feature leading renewable energy companies showcasing solutions and services across solar, wind, energy storage, grid technologies, and other clean energy segments.
Register now to attend the event and help shape the future of India’s renewable energy sector.
