Rising costs and the need for a reliable power supply are prompting industrial consumers to adopt rooftop solar to cut operating expenses and reduce dependence on grid power. For energy-intensive manufacturing businesses, on-site solar generation offers an opportunity to offset daytime electricity consumption and improve long-term cost predictability.
Uttar Pradesh-based industrial packaging manufacturer Kanpur Plastipack has installed a 1 MW rooftop solar project at its manufacturing facility in Rania, Kanpur Dehat, to reduce its electricity expenses.
The company’s manufacturing operations include extrusion, weaving, fabric finishing, and producing customized industrial packaging materials.
Commissioned by Helium Solar in September 2026, the project is expected to generate monthly electricity cost savings of approximately ₹600,000 (~$6,227) to ₹700,000 (~$7,264), translating into annual savings of nearly ₹8.4 million (~$87,173).
The rooftop solar system uses 700 Wp Trina solar modules and Sungrow inverters.
Kanpur Plastipack opted for rooftop solar mainly to reduce electricity costs, given the facility’s high power consumption.
Established in 1971, Kanpur Plastipack manufactures flexible intermediate bulk containers (jumbo bags), polypropylene woven fabrics, multifilament yarns, and UV masterbatches.
Kanpur Plastipack operates four manufacturing units in the Kanpur region, including facilities in the Panki Industrial Area and Kanpur Dehat.
After the residential sector, industrial installations accounted for the second-highest share of India’s 3.8 GW of rooftop solar capacity additions in the second quarter of 2026, according to Mercom’s Q2 and 1H 2026 India Rooftop Solar Market Report.
The need for reliable, affordable electricity is driving commercial and industrial (C&I) consumers, particularly energy-intensive manufacturers that require uninterrupted power for production, to adopt rooftop solar projects.
Mercom India hosts its pan-India C&I Clean Energy Meet series to bring renewable energy developers and C&Ipower consumers together to discuss challenges in clean energy adoption and how they can be addressed. The next event in the series will be held in Lucknow on October 9, 2026.
