Multi-business conglomerate ITC has commissioned its second offsite solar project, with a capacity of 9.45 MW, in Davanagere district in Karnataka.
The project is ITC’s fourth offsite solar project in the country, following those in Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka.
The offsite solar project will generate around 15 million units annually, providing energy to the company’s numerous facilities in the state. The project is spread over 26 acres and uses bi-facial module technology and string inverters.
With this project, nearly 90% of ITC’s energy procurement in Karnataka will be from renewable sources.
According to the group’s sustainability report for 2024, over 50% of ITC’s total energy requirements were met by renewable sources such as solar, wind, and biomass in the financial year (FY) 2023-24. The company has said its overall installed capacity of renewable energy assets spread across India is 205 MW. This includes two recently commissioned offsite solar power projects: a 13.5 MW facility in Uttar Pradesh and a 14.5 MW project in Karnataka.
In all, 16 ITC units met more than 90% of their energy requirements from renewable sources in FY 2023-24.
The ITC group has also invested in several solar power projects, with rooftop solar projects installed Haridwar in Uttarakhand, Bolarum in Telangana, Tribeni in West Bengal, Trichy in Tamil Nadu, and Kapurthala in Punjab, and more in the pipeline.
In 2022, the company commissioned its first offsite solar project in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. The 14.9 MW solar project was planned to be built with an investment of ₹760 million (~$10.14 million).
The group aims to meet 100% of its energy needs from renewable sources and achieve a 50% reduction in specific emissions and a 30% reduction in specific energy consumption by 2030 over a 2014-15 baseline.
