The Himachal Pradesh government has decided to install rooftop solar systems on buildings at all state health institutions as part of a broader renewable energy push.
The rooftop solar systems will be installed in phases to promote green energy and reduce electricity costs.
As a part of its renewable energy initiative, the government has set a target to install solar energy projects with a total capacity of 500 MW within the next two years.
At present, three utility-scale solar projects are already operational in the Una district. The 32 MW Pekhubela solar project has so far generated 79.03 million units of electricity, earning a revenue of ₹229.1 million (~$2.76 million).
The 5 MW Bhanjal solar project has produced 8.57 million units of electricity, generating a revenue of ₹31 million (~$370,000). The 10 MW Aghlaur solar project has generated 5.89 million units of electricity to date.
According to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the state’s annual energy consumption is around 13,000 million units, and the government aims to meet more than 90% of this requirement through renewable energy sources.
In addition to the three utility-scale solar projects, three projects with a combined capacity of 31 MW are under execution, while four others with a total capacity of 41 MW are in the tendering stage.
The state has also planned to set up a 200 MW solar project on barren land in the Damtal area of Kangra district. Projects ranging in capacity from 250 kW to 5 MW are being allotted, with the electricity generated to be purchased by the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEBL).
To strengthen decentralized renewable generation, 500 kW ground-mounted solar projects will be set up in all gram panchayats, with a total generation target of 150 MW. In the first phase, approval has been given for 500 kW solar projects in 24 panchayats, with having started in 16 of them.
Separately, Himachal Pradesh Energy Development Agency (HIMURJA) has allotted solar projects with a total capacity of 728.4 MW to HPSEBL, out of which 120 projects with a combined capacity of 150.13 MW are in operation.
Last year, the Himachal Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission finalized its Resource Adequacy Framework Regulations, 2025, to ensure that the state’s generating companies, distribution licensees, distribution companies, and load dispatch centers contract sufficient electricity generation capacity to reliably, cost-effectively, and sustainably meet peak demand.
HPSEBL invited bids to set up 8.33 MW of grid-connected, ground-mounted solar power projects under the RESCO model last January.
