Great British Energy (GBE) has issued a strategic plan to install 15 GW of clean energy projects and storage assets and mobilize £15 billion (~$20 billion) of private investment by 2030.

The publicly owned energy investment company said the plan outlines priorities for the next five years and shows how it can drive investment, support workers, and ensure communities feel the benefits of the energy transition.

GBE will operate as a developer and equity investor, giving the public a stake in the full lifecycle of clean energy infrastructure. The returns generated from publicly owned assets will be reinvested in new capacity, jobs, and opportunities across the UK.

To support the delivery of its mission, GBE has set out three priority areas for investment. First, ensure that communities and public services directly benefit from the clean energy infrastructure in their area. Second, unlock the land’s energy potential and strengthen grid stability across the country. The third is to accelerate the UK’s leadership in deep-water offshore wind and drive long-term growth in the sector.

The plan also provides further detail on the £1 billion  (~$1.3 billion) ‘Energy – Engineered in the UK’ program to help build a resilient, long-term supply chain for clean energy and support jobs across the country. It will be formally launched later this month.

GBE was established by the Great British Energy Act 2025 and is sponsored by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. It invests in and co-develops clean energy and energy storage projects and supports community energy and related supply chains.

In July, the UK government published a new solar roadmap to achieve 47 GW of operational solar capacity by 2030, as set out in the government’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan. The roadmap notes that removing barriers for rooftop deployment could increase residential rooftop solar to around 10 GW and commercial rooftop solar to more than 10 GW by 2030.

The UK’s transformation to clean energy is expected to draw £100 billion (~$136.1 billion) in private investment.
