Godawari Power & Ispat’s (GPIL) board of directors announced plans to invest an additional ₹2 billion (~$20.77 million) in its wholly owned subsidiary, Godawari New Energy, to set up a 40 GWh battery energy storage system manufacturing project.
The investment will be made by way of equity, loan, or any other permissible mode in one or more tranches. It will be in addition to the earlier approved investment of ₹5 billion (~$51.9 million), taking GPIL’s total initial investment in Godawari New Energy to ₹7 billion (~$72.7 million).
Last December, Godawari New Energy announced plans to expand the capacity of its 10 GWh battery energy system manufacturing plant to 40 GWh.
The company will invest ₹16.25 billion (~$178.74 million) in the BESS plant, which will be commissioned in two phases.
In the first phase to be commissioned in the financial year 2027, the company will set up a capacity of 20 GWh, with an investment of ₹10.25 billion (~$112.74 million).
In the second phase to be commissioned in FY 2029, the company will expand the capacity to 40 GWh at a cost of ₹6 billion (~$65.99 million).
GPIL said that the expansion of the BESS plant will enable effective land utilization, lower building structural costs, and entail lower investment.
GPIL is also setting up a 2 million tonnes-per-annum greenfield integrated steel plant, which will feature a Cold Rolling Mill. The contract for the engineering, design, manufacture, and supply of this mill has been entrusted to John Cockerill India. This CRM project will supply part of the raw material for manufacturing containers to GNEPL’s BESS plant.
India added nearly 547 MWh of battery energy storage capacity in 2025, around 26% year-over-year increase from over 433 MWh, according to the 2H & Annual 2025 India’s Energy Storage Landscape Report by Mercom India Research.
