Germany’s net solar capacity additions fell to 1.23 GW in September 2026 from 1.64 GW in August, as per the Market Master Data Register maintained by the country’s Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur).

However, September’s net solar capacity additions were higher than the 1.04 GW recorded in the corresponding month of 2025.

Adding 12.63 GW in the first nine months of 2026, Germany’s registered cumulative solar capacity stood at 130.68 GW across nearly 6.4 million generating units as of September 2026.

The country also added 3.17 GW of onshore wind and 1.81 GW of offshore wind capacity during the nine months. Biomass capacity rose modestly by 38.6 MW.

September’s estimate includes an allowance for registrations pending under Germany’s one-month registration deadline. The figure includes 1.06 GW of registered net additions and an estimated 161 MW of additional capacity to account for reporting delays.

Ground-Mounted Projects

During January–September, ground-mounted installations accounted for 6.85 GW of newly commissioned capacity across 1,628 units. Building-mounted systems contributed 5.45 GW across 331,750 units, while plug-in solar installations, commonly called balcony power plants, added 456.5 MW across 327,044 units.

State-wise Capacity Additions

Between January and September 2026, Bavaria led Germany’s solar capacity additions with 2.97 GW, followed by Baden-Württemberg with 1.56 GW and North Rhine-Westphalia at 1.51 GW.

North Rhine-Westphalia recorded the highest net onshore wind capacity additions at 822.4 MW, followed by Schleswig-Holstein with 515.3 MW and Lower Saxony at 497.1 MW. Offshore wind capacity additions totaled 1.81 GW, entirely within Germany’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

Gross Capacity Commissioned

In September, Germany’s commissioned solar power reached 1.24 GW, compared to 1.65 GW in August.

In the onshore wind sector, commissioned capacity increased to 542.7 MW in September from 503.4 MW in August. Offshore wind commissioning declined to 240 MW from 356.6 MW during the same period.

In the first six months of 2026, Germany added 7.39 GW of solar capacity. The addition raised Germany’s cumulative installed solar capacity to 125.37 GW at the end of June 2026.

Earlier this year, Germany rolled out a roadmap to transition away from fossil fuels by 2045 and has proposed phasing out coal-fired power by 2038. Renewables account for about 55% of Germany’s gross electricity consumption, and the figure is set to rise to at least 80% by 2030.
