The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) have invited bids for the development of a 500 MW solar power project in the Western Nile area under the build, own, and operate model.
The developers will design, finance, construct, own, and operate the project.
The last date to submit bids is May 11, 2026.
EETC will purchase the generated power under the terms of the power purchase agreement (PPA).
Bidders must pay $500 for receiving the bidding documents.
Recently, Egypt announced plans to meet its high-power demand in summer by adding 3 GW of solar energy to the grid in 2026. The plan also involves adding 600 MW of battery energy storage system capacity before the onset of summer. The addition of the battery storage capacity will raise the country’s on-grid storage capacity to 1.1 GW. Egypt estimates a 6% to 7% increase in power demand during the summer months. These plans align with the country’s target to achieve a minimum of 42% renewable energy share in its power mix by 2030.
In December last year, Egypt laid the foundation stone for the Atum Solar manufacturing complex in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, a $210 million project being developed by a consortium of partners from China, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt. Located in the TEDA industrial zone, the facility will have an annual capacity of 2 GW each for solar cell and solar module manufacturing.
Earlier, Egypt’s Ministry of Planning stated that the country has allocated E£136.3 billion ($2.8 billion) to the electricity and renewable energy sector in its 2025-26 development plan. The country’s budget for the power sector nearly doubled from E£72.6 billion (~$1.49 billion) last year. The fund allocation followed the financial closure of Scatec’s $600 million solar power project and $1 billion wind project in June.
