India added a record 4.9 GW of rooftop solar capacity during the first nine months of the calendar year 2025, a 161% year-over-year increase, according to Mercom India’s Q3 2025 India Rooftop Solar Market Report. The government’s accelerated push to meet the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana target of two million residential rooftop installations by October 2025 was the key driver of growth, with the milestone achieved ahead of schedule in September 2025.
The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) initiated suo motu proceedings against several inter-state transmission licensees (TRANSCOs) following extensive non-compliance with mandatory performance reporting requirements under the regulatory framework. The Commission expressed serious concern about what it described as a near-total failure by transmission companies to comply with the Standards of Performance rule, intended to ensure transparency, accountability, and consumer protection in the operation of the national transmission network.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy issued revised guidelines for the series approval of solar modules, detailing how manufacturers and test laboratories must conduct performance and safety testing for compulsory Bureau of Indian Standards registration under the ‘Solar Systems, Devices and Components Goods Order, 2025.’ MNRE had released the ‘Solar Systems, devices and Components Goods Order, 2025, in January 2025.
The Government of Gujarat notified the Green Hydrogen Policy 2025 to achieve a production capacity of 3 million metric tons per annum by 2035. The main objectives also include achieving 30 GW of electrolyzer capacity and 75 GW of renewable energy capacity. The state aims to facilitate investments of nearly ₹5 trillion (~$55.60 billion) across the green hydrogen and renewable energy sectors.
Dilip Buildcon has been declared as the L-1 bidder for REC Power Development and Consultancy’s auction to set up an intrastate transmission system to establish a 400 kV substation and associated transmission lines in Karnataka’s Belagavi district on a build, own, operate basis. It will acquire a 100% stake in RECPDCL’s project special purpose vehicle. The tender was floated on April 30, 2025.
The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) invited bids from renewable energy developers to supply 1,000 MW of excess power (FDRE-VIII) from projects with existing medium-term power purchase agreements. Bids must be submitted by January 30, 2026. Bids will be opened on February 4. Developers must set up renewable energy power projects connected to the intrastate or interstate transmission system, along with an energy storage system, and also build the transmission network up to the interconnection or delivery point, at their own cost.
SECI issued a request for selection for developers to set up 1,000 MW/8,000 MWh of pumped-storage projects (PSP) for “on Demand” usage under the PSP-I program. The interstate transmission system-connected projects will be set up on a build, own, operate model. The tender targets an aggregate storage capacity of 8,000 MWh (1,000 MW × 8 hours) utilizing PSP on an on-demand basis. SECI will sign power purchase agreements (PPAs) with the successful bidders to provide storage services to buying entities over the entire PPA term.
Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation issued a tender to set up 33 MW grid-connected rooftop solar projects on the state government buildings in Baran, Bundi, Jodhpur, Pali, and Sirohi. The tender also involves an operation and maintenance contract for 25 years. Bidders must quote for a minimum capacity of 5 MW and a maximum of 33 MW. Bids must be submitted by January 27, 2026. Bids will be opened on January 28. The scope of work entails the design, erection, testing, and commissioning of the rooftop solar projects.
Ola Electric Mobility received an approval order from the Ministry of Heavy Industries to release incentives totaling ₹3.66 billion (~$44 million) under the Production Linked Incentive program for Automobile and Auto Components (PLI-Auto Program) for claims for the financial year 2024–25. The approval pertains to the demand incentive for the determined sales value for FY 2024-25 and authorizes the release of ₹3.66 billion (~$44 million) to Ola Electric through IFCI, the designated financial institution for disbursement under the PLI-Auto Program.
Solarworld Energy Solutions received a letter of award from NTPC REL for the engineering, procurement, and construction of a 250 MW solar power project in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The estimated cost of work is ₹7.25 billion (~$80.62 million). The tender was floated in June this year. Solarworld will also be responsible for providing operation and maintenance services for three years. The scope further includes completing a pre-engineered inverter room (if required) with both low- and high-tension switchgears associated with the power conditioning unit.
