Energy storage-led approach gains ground in transmission planning

Tata Power Solar, Jakson Green, Sterling & Wilson, Amara Raja Infra, and HARTEK were the top utility-scale solar engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) service providers in 2025, according to Mercom’s recently released India Solar Market Leaderboard 2026 Report. Tata Power Solar emerged as the leading utility-scale solar EPC company in 2025 with a 19% market share, followed by Jakson Green with 15%. Sterling & Wilson, Amara Raja Infra, and HARTEK rounded off the top five.

The National Committee on Transmission recently deliberated on the feasibility of battery energy storage systems (BESS) as a non-wire alternative to conventional power transmission lines to address challenges arising from renewable energy curtailment and grid imbalances. Along with grid-forming inverters, BESS can be planned as a transmission asset and built through the tariff-based competitive bidding route to avoid issues such as a lack of buyers for standalone storage or off-solar hours peak power.

The Bombay High Court dismissed a writ petition challenging the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission’s review order on tariff revisions, holding that the petitioners must avail themselves of the remedy before the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity. The Court ruled that the petitioners have an alternative remedy under Section 111 of the Electricity Act, 2003, and declined to exercise its writ jurisdiction.

The Solar Energy Corporation of India invited proposals from scheduled commercial banks and financial institutions for a term loan of up to ₹27.2 billion (~$289.6 million) to finance a 700 MW solar project at Radhanesda, Gujarat. Bids must be submitted by May 14, 2026. The project is being developed under the Central Public Sector Undertaking program, Phase II, and is scheduled to commence commercial operations on February 6, 2028.

NTPC SAIL Power Company, a joint venture of NTPC and Steel Authority of India, invited bids for an engineering, procurement, and construction package for a 20 MW floating solar project at Maroda Reservoir-2, in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh. The scope of work covers the development of the floating solar project along with a power evacuation system, including the supply and installation of solar modules in the designated area.

Rooftop solar solutions and products company, Fujiyama Power Systems, approved the acquisition of an additional 31% equity stake in Zayo Energy and Zayo Cables. Delhi-based Zayo Energy manufactures solar panel components, including ethylene vinyl acetate sheets, junction boxes, and backsheets. Zayo Cables manufactures electrical and electronic wires and cables, including insulated wires made of steel, copper, and aluminum.

U.S.-based power producer NextEra Energy reported operating revenue of $6.7 billion for the first quarter (Q1) of 2026, a 7.3% year-over-year increase from $6.25 billion in Q1 2025. The revenue, however, missed analysts’ expectations by $390 million. NextEra’s adjusted earnings were $2.275 billion, a 12% increase from $2.038 billion in the corresponding quarter last year.

Finland-based TheStorage, a provider of industrial thermal energy storage solutions, raised €3.6 million (~$4.2 million) in a seed funding round to scale its technology and accelerate commercial deployment. To date, TheStorage has raised a total of €5.8 million (~$6.8 million) in funding. The round was led by Voima Ventures, with participation from existing investors Superhero Capital and 2C Ventures, as well as new investor Momentum Partners.
