India’s solar power generation rose nearly 18% year-over-year (YoY) to 133.8 billion units (BU) in 2024 from 113.4 BU, according to data published by the Central Electricity Authority. In the first nine months (9M) of the calendar year 2024, the country added 16.4 GW of solar capacity, up 167% YoY from 6.2 GW. The commissioning of several previously delayed projects due to the fall in module prices drove capacity additions in 9M 2024.
The Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEBL) invited bids for grid-connected, ground-mounted solar power projects of a cumulative capacity of 7.8 MW under the renewable energy service company model. Bidders must quote for four lots—Palampur (Lot I), Sarabai (Lot II), Nahan (Lot III), and Jogindernagar (Lot IV). Selected bidders must supply HPSEBL 14.607 million units of energy annually. They must provide at least 80% of the annual energy.
The West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company invited bids for the comprehensive operation and maintenance of six ground-mounted solar power projects with a combined capacity of 60 MW. The project’s estimated cost is ₹150.4 million (~$1.72 million). Selected bidders must maintain six 10 MW projects in Dhaka I and Dhaka II in Birbhum, Santaldih and Chharrah in Purulia, and Sankrail in Jhargram districts.
The Indian Energy Exchange achieved a monthly electricity traded volume of 10,910 million units for January 2025, representing a 16% YoY growth. India’s energy consumption reached 137.5 BU, a 2.7% increase from the previous year. The market clearing price in the day-ahead market was recorded at ₹4.43 (~$0.051)/kWh, marking a 24% YoY decrease.
Gujarat-based power company Torrent Power recorded a profit after tax (PAT) of ₹4.89 billion (~$55.9 million) for the third quarter of the financial year 2025, a YoY increase of 31% from ₹3.74 billion (~$42.8 million). The increase in PAT was primarily due to cold weather conditions, which led to an increased power demand. There was a one-time gain in cable sales of about ₹770 million (~$8.8 million), contributing to the increase in other income. The company’s revenue from operations saw a slight increase of 2% YoY to ₹64.99 billion (~$743 million).
The United States International Trade Commission determined that imports of active anode material from China, allegedly sold in the U.S. at what it claims to be unfairly low prices subsidized by the Chinese government, are likely hindering the growth of the domestic industry. Following this decision, the U.S. Department of Commerce will continue its investigations, with a preliminary countervailing duty determination expected by March 13, 2025, and a preliminary anti-dumping duty determination around May 27, 2025.
