Coal India has invited expressions of interest (EoI) from potential buyers to purchase power at a fixed tariff from its 4.5 GW renewable energy projects, with delivery at the nearest interconnection point of the interstate transmission system (ISTS) network.
Coal India plans to set up 4.5 GW of renewable energy capacity in India, including 2.5 GW to 3 GW of solar and 1.5 GW to 2 GW of wind power. The EoI’s objective is to find prospective buyers to offtake the power these projects will generate.
Bids must be submitted by June 9, 2025. Bids will be opened on June 10.
The projects will be developed in phases, with Coal India responsible for identifying suitable land, securing grid connectivity, and awarding the necessary engineering, procurement, and construction contracts.
The projects will be capable of generating at least 11,500 million units of electricity per year, with solar power contributing at least 60% of the total energy. Coal India will offer the power to buyers under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). The electricity supply will begin within 24 months of signing the PPA.
Buyers must purchase electricity on a take-or-pay basis and provide Coal India with appropriate payment security measures. They must obtain all necessary approvals and permits to transport the power from the delivery point to their facilities. The delivery point will be the nearest ISTS or central transmission utility substation to the project’s location.
All charges related to the transmission and distribution of power beyond the delivery point, such as transmission and wheeling charges, open access charges, surcharges, electricity duty, water conservation cess, urban cess, cross-subsidy charges, state load dispatch center charges, and other applicable fees, must be paid by the buyers.
In December last year, Coal India invited EoI to develop a 1 GW grid-connected solar power project in Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam’s solar park in Pugal, Rajasthan.
