China has announced its new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets for 2035, aiming to expand the country’s installed wind and solar capacity to 3.6 TW.

The new targets for wind and solar capacities are over six times their 2020 targets.

Chinese President Xi Jinping revealed the new targets at the United Nations Climate Summit held in New York.

The revised NDCs will also make new energy vehicles mainstream in new vehicle sales.

They also aim to reduce economy-wide net greenhouse gas emissions by 7% to 10% from peak levels and increase the share of non-fossil fuels in total energy consumption to over 30%.

Under the new targets, China will expand the National Carbon Emissions Trading Market to cover major high-emission sectors.

In his remarks at the Climate Summit, Xi emphasized that the global green transition should help narrow the gap between the global North and the global South.

He added that countries need to honor the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, whereby developed countries take the lead in fulfilling emission reduction obligations and provide more financial and technological support to developing countries.

Emphasizing that the world now faces a huge demand for green development, Xi said that it is essential for countries to strengthen international coordination in green technologies.

He highlighted the importance of industries in addressing the shortfall in green production capacity and ensuring the free flow of high-quality green products globally.

According to China’s National Energy Administration, the country added 152.5 GW of solar power capacity in the second quarter of 2025, a 168.8% year-over-year growth from 56.74 GW. The country’s cumulative installed capacity reached 1.1 TW as of June 2025. Its solar installations for the first half of 2025 stood at 212.21 GW, up 107% from 102.48 GW during the same period last year. Installations, however, dropped in June, with only 14.36 GW added.

According to the “Special Action Plan for Large-Scale Construction of New Energy Storage (2025–2027) released by China’s National Development and Reform Commission, the nation has also set a target to install over 180 GW of energy storage capacity by 2027, up from 95 GW as of June this year.
