Solar and energy storage project developer Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar, has sold two standalone battery energy storage projects totaling 200 MW/800 MWh in France to energy storage owner and operator BW ESS. The acquisition marks BW ESS’ entry into the French energy market.
The portfolio comprises the 100 MW/400 MWh Baixas project in the Pyrénées-Orientales department and the 100 MW/400 MWh Coquainvilliers project in Calvados.
According to Recurrent Energy, the projects benefit from advanced transmission-level grid connection positions and very limited expected network constraints.
Recurrent Energy originated and developed both projects, securing land, advancing grid connections, managing permitting, and engaging with local stakeholders. Under the transaction, Recurrent Energy will continue managing the projects through the remaining development phase.
Once the remaining development milestones are achieved, BW ESS will take responsibility for constructing the projects and bringing them into commercial operation. The company plans to retain ownership and operate the battery storage assets over the long term.
In another transaction in 2026, BW ESS has acquired two utility-scale standalone battery energy storage projects in Spain from Spanish renewable energy and storage developer Navacant. The projects, located in the Valencia region, have a combined capacity of 126 MW and up to 675 MWh of energy storage capacity.
In 2026, Recurrent Energy also completed the sale of its 100 MW/200 MWh Fort Duncan battery energy storage project to Hunt Energy Network, a Dallas-based developer of distributed energy resources. Located in Maverick County, Texas, the project reached commercial operation in June 2025.
According to Mercom’s recently released 9M 2026 Funding and M&A for Energy Storage report, project acquisition activity accelerated sharply during the first nine months of 2026, with approximately 21.6 GW of battery storage capacity changing hands in 108 transactions, compared with 10.1 GW in 46 transactions during the same period in 2025.
