Speaking on the sidelines of the Mercom India Renewables Summit 2026, held in New Delhi on July 1 and 2, Bhavesh Kumar Rathod, Founder and MD at Soleos Energy, said there is a significant shortage of solar cells compared to module capacity. While module capacity is substantial, domestic cell manufacturing capacity remains limited, leaving non-integrated manufacturers struggling. Also, high levels of curtailment in states such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra—reaching 30–40% for some projects—remain a major hurdle. However, this is also viewed as an opportunity for developers to store excess power and sell it as “firm, dispatchable” energy during peak demand. He added that storage is increasingly viewed as essential to provide the “firmness” and predictability that intermittent solar and wind energy lack.
