Installed cumulative wind capacity in India has now crossed 32 GW. In the financial year (FY) 2016-17, wind projects aggregating 5,400 MW were installed across India, well over its target of 4,000 MW, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

Andhra Pradesh accounted for most of the installed capacity, with 2,190 MW. Gujarat and Karnataka were other major wind power installers with 1,275 MW and 882 MW installed. Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Kerala reported 357 MW, 288 MW, 262 MW, 118 MW, 23 MW and 8 MW of wind power capacity addition.

The introduction of bidding has spurred activity in the sector. Now all wind projects will be tendered, stated an MNRE official. The generation-based incentive program will be done away with and accelerated depreciation rate has decreased, which forced project developers to finish projects before March 31, 2017. Because of that, we over-achieved the target, added the MNRE official.
