					</table><p>London-headquartered <a href="https://octopus.energy/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Octopus Energy</a> has announced it would invest £1.5 billion (~$1.8 billion) in the Asia Pacific (APAC) energy market by 2027 to accelerate the transition to clean energy.</p>
<p>The company said it planned to invest £1.2 billion (~$1.4 billion) into solar and wind generation. Half the funds will be invested in renewable energy projects across Japan.</p>
<p>Octopus will scale its presence in Asia with a commitment of £300 million (~$370 million) to expand its tech innovation and retail energy hub in Tokyo using its tech platform Kraken.</p>
<p>The investment comes as Japan works to shift towards a clean energy future, propelled by the recent G7 ministers’ agreement to speed up clean energy development, collectively pledging to increase offshore wind capacity by 150 GW by 2030 and solar capacity to over 1 TW.</p>
<p>The investment in the tech hub builds on the company’s successful partnership with Japan-based energy giant <a href="https://www.tokyo-gas.co.jp/language/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tokyo Gas</a>, which saw the two companies launch a joint venture in 2021.</p>
<p>Octopus Energy Group Founder Greg Jackson said, &#8220;Our partnership with Tokyo Gas has grown ever stronger, and I’m delighted to be bringing even more investment to Japan and into the UK. Linking our businesses in Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore to the UK and Europe, our operations in Japan have helped create a unique global technology ecosystem benefiting everyone.”</p>
<p>The generation team of Octopus plans to leverage this strategic partnership to raise £400 million (~$494 million) from investors in APAC until 2028 to build more wind and solar farms in the UK while bringing crucial energy expertise to Europe and strengthening supply chains.</p>
<p>British Ambassador to Japan Julia Longbottom said, “Japan&#8217;s renewable energy market is ripe for investment. The launch of our newly-forged UK-Japan renewable energy partnership marks a significant milestone in our bilateral collaboration, one that could set the stage for a boom in renewable energy projects in Japan.”</p>
<p>Last December, Octopus Energy <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/funding-and-ma-roundup-bboxx-edf-secure-11-million-loan-to-expand-clean-energy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> it acquired solar developer Zestec Renewable Energy, which is developing a pipeline of more than 160 MW of solar projects on corporate rooftops in the UK.</p>
<p>Earlier this month, provider of sustainable energy solutions Xlinks <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/funding-and-ma-roundup-energy-dome-44-million" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> the closing of its new development funding round, raising £30 million (~$37.7 million) from Octopus Energy and the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company to build a subsea power interconnector.</p>

Octopus to Invest $1.8 Billion in Renewable Energy Projects in APAC

<p>In a first for the company, <a href="https://www.tokyo-gas.co.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Tokyo Gas</a> Company Limited plans to issue green bonds through a public offering platform. Tokyo Gas is set to issue the 10-year green bonds to the tune of ¥10 billion (~$95 million) in December 2020.</p>
<p>The capital procured from the green bonds will be allocated to renewable energy projects undertaken by Tokyo Gas. It plans to finance and refinance two solar projects; the 514 MW Aktina solar PV project located in Wharton County, Texas it <a href="https://mercomindia.com/funding-and-ma-roundup/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">acquired</a> from Hecate Energy, a privately-held independent solar project developer in July 2020. The second project is the 63.2 MW Annaka solar PV project in the Japanese Gunma Prefecture it acquired from private equity firm Asia Pacific Land in February 2020 through its subsidiary, Prominet Power.</p>
<p>According to Mercom Capital Group’s global solar funding and M&amp;A <a href="https://mercomcapital.com/clean-energy-reports/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">report</a>, oil and gas majors were the major acquirers of solar assets in 1H 2020 and accounted for about 6.5 GW (45%) of acquisitions.</p>
<p>The lead managers handling the green bond issue are Mitsubishi UFJ, Morgan Stanley Securities Company Limited, and SMBC Nikko Securities Incorporated.</p>
<p>DNV GL Business Assurance Japan K.K. &#8211; a third-party assessment organization &#8211; is evaluating and verifying the bond&#8217;s conformity with various standards related to green bonds&#8217; issuance.</p>
<p>Tokyo Gas has received a preliminary evaluation &#8211; GA1 &#8211; from the Rating &amp; Investment Information Incorporated the highest score possible in R&amp;I green bond assessments according to the company.  Besides, Tokyo Gas has received certification under the standards of the Climate Bonds Initiative (CBI), an international, investor-focused not-for-profit that stipulates standards to ensure the credibility and transparency of green bonds.</p>
<p>Tokyo Gas aims to use the green bonds to finance its management&#8217;s vision &#8216;Compass 2030&#8217; that aims to achieve Net Zero CO₂ emissions, including consumer emissions, and transition to a decarbonized society. The company aims to drop emissions by 10 million tons by 2030.</p>
<p>Recently, ReNew Power, an Indian independent power producer, <a href="https://mercomindia.com/renew-power-raises-green-bonds/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">raised</a> around $325 million through overseas green bonds.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the Allied Irish Bank (AIB) had announced that it had <a href="https://mercomindia.com/allied-irish-bank-launches-green-bonds/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">issued</a> green bonds worth €1 billion (~$ 1.16 billion) to finance projects with climate change benefits. According to its press statement, AIB has become the first Irish bank to complete a green bond issuance. It is also the second European bank to raise supplementary capital by issuing a green bond.</p>

Tokyo Gas Plans to Issue Green Bonds Worth ¥10 billion

<p>Here are some noteworthy cleantech news and announcements of the day from around the world:</p>
<p><strong>Visaka Industries, an Indian cement roofing sheet manufacturer, announced that it had acquired patent rights for ATUM, an integrated solar roof.</strong> The company claimed that ATUM could generate 20-40% more power compared to the traditional solar roofs. The company described it as an integrated, seamless solar roof made with poly or mono-crystalline solar cells and cement boards. It also claimed that it is the first solar panel which can be directly used as a roof. ATUM has secured the UL certification as per IEC standards, Visaka Industries noted.</p>
<p><strong>Verizon Communications, a U.S.-based telecommunications company, has </strong><strong><a href="https://www.verizon.com/about/news/verizon-new-renewable-energy-purchase-agreements" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">entered</a> into four long-term energy purchase agreements to increase its renewable energy capacity up to 840 MW</strong>. The company has signed two agreements with Brookfield Renewables for two wind energy projects with a cumulative capacity of 160 MW. The New York-based wind projects are expected to be fully operational in 2021. It also entered two pacts with First Solar for two solar projects with a total capacity of 296 MW currently under development in the PJM Interconnection regional market. Both solar projects are expected to be fully operational in late 2022.</p>
<p><strong>Xpeng, a China-based electric vehicle manufacturer, has <a href="https://ir.xiaopeng.com/news/news-details/2020/XPeng-Announces-Pricing-of-Initial-Public-Offering/default.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">announced</a> the pricing of its initial public offering of around 99.7 million American Depository Shares (ADSs)</strong>, each representing two Class A ordinary shares of the company, at a public offering price of $15 per ADS. The EV manufacturer is expected to raise approximately $1.5 billion of gross proceeds from the initial public offering. The ADSs are expected to begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange on August 27, 2020, under the symbol “XPEV,” and the offering is expected to close on August 31, 2020, subject to customary closing conditions.</p>
<p><strong>Statkraft, a Norway-based renewable energy provider, <a href="https://www.statkraft.com/newsroom/news-and-stories/archive/2020/statkraft-supplies-naturstrom-with-600-gigawatt-hours-of-green-electricity-from-bavarian-solar-park/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a> that it had signed a long-term power supply agreement for 50 MW with Germany-based Naturstrom.</strong> According to the agreement, Statkraft will provide electricity to Naturstrom for 11 years from autumn 2020 to December 2031 from its Germany-based the Bavarian solar park Schornhof project. Statkraft said that it would provide around 600 GW of solar power to Naturstrom.</p>
<p><strong>New-York based utilities Central Hudson Gas, Electric and Orange, and Rockland have <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20200827005144/en/Uplight-Enel-Launch-Electric-Vehicle-Charging-Pilot/?feedref=JjAwJuNHiystnCoBq_hl-Ypx8OuIA-qqxXAfOC1go22PU1fv-fCAtwybrddq94az7dI9_69nqXXndEkzoNy31peBvhKXN8xoKDPrCnMXhC58cMd5Jhr97vTYoLZQbGkSFja_QkRbjKVqSkUPuEMBEw==" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">launched</a> an electric vehicle charging pilot project</strong> in partnership with Uplight and Enel X for New York Hudson Valley utility consumers. The project provides an instant discount of $450 to authorized consumers when purchasing a Wi-Fi-enabled EV charging station on the online market. Further, the company said that the project would empower consumers to charge their EVs during times of the cleanest power generation.</p>

Daily News Wrap-Up: Visaka Industries Acquires Patents for Integrated Solar Roof

<p>Here are some important funding and m&amp;a updates from the global renewable energy industry from the past week:</p>
<p><strong>Northvolt, a lithium-ion battery manufacturer, </strong><a href="https://bit.ly/mercomndfq" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>announced</strong></a><strong> the signing of a $1.6 billion debt raise </strong>provided by a consortium of commercial banks, pension funds, and public financial institutions. This increased the total amount of capital raised to date for the development of factories and R&amp;D investments to over $3 billion.</p>
<p><strong>Wyze Labs, a smart home device manufacturer, </strong><a href="https://bit.ly/mercomwlcn" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>closed</strong></a><strong> a $15 million financing deal led by Norwest Venture Partners</strong>, with participation from American Family Ventures, Marcy Venture Partners, and Amino Capital. The $15 million funding will be used to continue building smart homes for mass adoption by further improving the IoT (Internet of Things) infrastructure and artificial intelligence in current product offerings, and by expanding into new product categories.</p>
<p><strong>Tokyo</strong><strong> Gas has forayed into the U.S. market with the </strong><strong><a href="https://www.tokyo-gas.co.jp/IR/english/library/pdf/tekijikaiji/20200729-04e.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">acquisition</a></strong><strong> of a 514 MW solar project located in Texas from Hecate Energy. </strong>The acquisition is scheduled for August 5, 2020. Construction of the Aktina project is planned to commence in Q3 2020 and is expected to be completed next year. With this acquisition, Tokyo Gas now has over 1,200 MW of solar under contract or ownership.</p>
<p><strong>NRG Energy</strong><strong>, </strong><strong>a power generation and distribution company, </strong><strong><a href="https://bit.ly/mercomnrtq" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">entered</a></strong><strong> into a definitive agreement with Centrica</strong> under which NRG will acquire Direct Energy, it&#8217;s North American subsidiary. The deal was valued at $3.625 billion in an all-cash transaction. The transaction builds on NRG’s position, adding more than three million retail customers across 50 states and Canada.</p>
<p><strong> </strong><strong>Solar Plus Development (a subsidiary of Plus Renewable Technologies) and Avondale Solar </strong><a href="https://bit.ly/mercomavsl" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">completed</a><strong> the sale of a 350 MW solar PV project in Fort Bend County, Texas</strong><strong>. </strong>The project, Fighting Jays Solar, has been sold to an affiliate of Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. The project is expected to break ground in the second half of 2020 and be operational by the summer of 2022.</p>
<p><strong>Advantage Capital Solar Partners III has </strong><strong><a href="https://bit.ly/mercomnrgc">completed</a></strong><strong> a solar investment tax credit financing </strong>to support Generate Capital’s development of four community solar projects in New York, representing 11 MW in generating capacity.</p>
<p><strong>The AES Corporation, a Fortune 500 company that generates and distributes electrical power, </strong><strong><a href="https://bit.ly/mercomaedc">made</a></strong><strong> a strategic investment in 5B</strong><strong>, </strong>a solar technology innovator based in Sydney, Australia. Together, AES and 5B will help clients accelerate their use of solar energy.</p>
