					</table><p>Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (<a href="https://www.ise.fraunhofer.de/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fraunhofer ISE</a>) has integrated 120 PERC (passivation emitter rear contact cell) shingle solar cells into a passenger car&#8217;s sheet metal hood to fabricate a 115-watt rated solar-active surface for onboard power generation.</p>
<p>To make the most efficient use of the available surface area on the hood, the Fraunhofer team constructed their prototypes using a selection of interdigitated back contact, PERC shingle, and TOPCon shingle solar cells. In principle, any solar cell technology can be used.</p>
<p>Laminating the surface area with film resulted in a textured surface structure that was matched to the vehicle color using MorphoColor technology.</p>
<p>&#8220;We applied the solar cells to the hood panel of a frequently sold car model in Germany, interconnected them, and laminated them with film. This process required careful optimization to ensure an air-pocket-free and wrinkle-free module, preserving the integrity of the hood structure despite its curved shape,&#8221; said Martin Heinrich, the coordinator for solar mobility at Fraunhofer ISE.</p>
<p>In addition to the curved shape, the substrate is unique to the hood solar module, as it is made of sheet metal rather than a classic rear surface made of film or glass. This prompted the scientists to investigate the adhesive properties of various material combinations.</p>
<p>After identifying suitable materials, the research team built prototypes with different quantities of solar cells and different cell and interconnection technologies.</p>
<p>The team tested all prototypes intensively in the laboratory to ensure the solar engine hood demonstrators&#8217; electrical performance, reliability, and durability.</p>
<p>According to the researchers, the technology could also be applied to the metal roofs of vehicles, which would be much lighter than photovoltaic roofs made of glass. They also stated that expanding the technical possibilities for integrating photovoltaics into vehicle shells will appeal to more and more customers; there is still a lot of potential to be tapped.</p>
<p>The engine hood was developed as part of research projects supported by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.</p>
<p>In July, researchers from Fraunhofer ISE and the Materials Research Center FMF at the University of Freiburg <a href="https://www.mercomindia.com/researchers-at-fraunhofer-ise-organic-solar-cells" target="_blank" rel="noopener">achieved</a> an efficiency of 15.8% for an organic solar cell covering a one-square-centimeter area.</p>

Fraunhofer Integrates Solar Cells into Car Hoods for Onboard Power Generation

<p>Here are some noteworthy cleantech announcements of the day from around the world:</p>
<p><strong>Visaka Industries Limited has installed ATUM, an integrated solar roof, in Sharjah, UAE.</strong> The solar integrated roof was installed at the Mosque at Khor Fakkan Corniche, Phase 1, Sports Beach, and Central Plaza. ATUM, touted as the world&#8217;s first integrated solar roof, generates electricity and is a completely integrated, seamless solar roof made with poly or monocrystalline solar cells and cement boards &#8211; a highly durable roofing material making it the world&#8217;s first solar panel which can be directly used as a roof.</p>
<p><strong>Azelio has won its commercial order for its long-duration energy storage solution from ALEC Energy. The storage unit will be part of a system in the fourth phase of one of the world&#8217;s largest solar parks, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Complex in Dubai. </strong>The MBR Solar Complex is spread over a total area of 77 square kilometers in Dubai. The system will combine Azelio&#8217;s technology with PV and fast-response equipment such as li-ion batteries.</p>
<p><strong>The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the African Development Bank have </strong><a href="https://www.afdb.org/en/news-and-events/press-releases/irena-and-african-development-bank-partner-scale-renewable-energy-investments-africa-39798" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>agreed</strong></a><strong> to jointly support investment in low carbon energy projects</strong>, a move expected to advance Africa&#8217;s energy transition. The two entities signed a Declaration of Intent to coordinate a range of activities, including co-organizing renewable energy investment forums as part of IRENA&#8217;s contribution to the Climate Investment Platform and collaboration on the Bank&#8217;s annual flagship Africa Investment Forum event. The partnership will also focus on enhancing the role of renewable energy in African countries&#8217; Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Accord and other sustainable development objectives.</p>
<p><strong>GE Renewable Energy </strong><a href="https://www.veolianorthamerica.com/media/press-releases/ge-renewable-energy-announces-us-blade-recycling-contract-veolia" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>announced</strong></a><strong> that it had signed a multi-year agreement with Veolia North America to recycle blades removed from its U.S.-based onshore wind turbines during upgrades and repowering efforts.</strong> Through this agreement, GE plans to recycle the majority of blades that are replaced during repowering efforts. As a part of the deal, blades that have been removed from turbines will be shredded at VNA&#8217;s processing facility in Missouri and then used as a replacement for coal, sand, and clay at cement manufacturing facilities across the U.S.</p>
